Oh, good. Just in case I want to relocate my head to a different part of somebody else's body.
I'd like my head to be surgically implanted into my boyfriend's dick. Fun!!!

I read the first sentence of your post, and before reading the rest of it I thought, "I bet she wants to be transplanted to her boyfriend's penis."

Well that way I can keep my eyes open and make sure he's not stickin' it in other girls.

omfg. that's funny as hell.
I think the experiment is cool too. :D

Haha...all the wacky stuff derives from Japan eh?!? j/p.
But it's partially true.

that's really an awesome experiment...
it also tells you that when you get decapitated, for a minute or so you'll be completely conscious.

i remember an old story about how a scientist in france was going to be beheaded and as a last experiment he said he'd blink as long as he stayed conscious. he blinked 11 times.

The brain grew and the mouth of the baby rat even moved as if trying to drink milk, it said.
i'm confused by the above statement.
so the brain grew while inside the thigh.. and.. the baby rat without the brain was moving??
what??

actually, i think they placed the entire baby rat's head onto the adult rat's thigh, and not just the brain itself.

i thought most surgeries had to be done in a relatively cold room??
some scientists get bored.. and so desperate to discover something that.. things like this happen.

Actually the implications of this is a major step. Look past the grafting of the rat's head to the thigh. The fact that the head was successfully transplanted onto the thigh while at the same time maintaining some neurological and neurophysiological signs is a pretty big step. Considering the brain was without blood supply for a period of time.
It is really big development in the field of transplant surgery. Take for instance a patient with phase IV cancer of the brain. Cancer of the brain being one of the most difficult cancers to treat. Surgery can prove to be risky and sometimes not even an option if the growth is too deep in the brain tissue or where the tumor is on the brain. Plus all the sulci of the brain makes it a very tricky and difficult procedure.
Radiation Therapy is tricky since you're essentially bombarding the area of the brain with radiation. The safest is chemotherapy but isn't always effective for Phase IV. So this basically leaves you with the surgery and radiation therapy route.
And yeah some transplant surgeries are done in a cold room or the healthy organ to be transplanted kept at a certain temperature.
Yeah it's freaky and gross but the implications are pretty big I guess.
The brain itself is a complex organ. It isn't as simple as a bolt-on in relation to the body. Who's to say the baby rat brain did not vegetate during the procedure? What did the doctors do to compensate for synapse corruption/failure within the brain during the time it endured no blood?
This article, while very cool, proves nothing but a doctor's twisted sense of discovery.
With all that said, THAT WAS FUCKING COOL!!!!11

Yeah I think the point was to prove that the brain can survive somewhat without blood supply if the procedure was done at a certain temperature. They did say the head showed signs of neurological activity trying to drink milk) and the brain did grow in size.
Not really sure how valid the whole thing is.
Seems pretty twisted to me too.

while this case may be gruesome and frankensteinish, as long as people aren't used to do this i think it could be useful. don't know how exactly, but when we're talking about creating new lifeforms (previous post somewhere), we don't have to follow conventional rules. it could make the world a more interesting place.

yeah.. i guess this experiment might have produced some meaning information that could be used later on.. who knows..

oh yeah, sure... no one says that the brain retained any higher order functions. the milk sucking is a reflex (normally triggered by having a nipple in the rat mouth)... so all it means that some of the neural connections are intact.
Like Chasiubau_boy said, it's got some majorly big implications.

he may have still been conscious afterwards, but without enough energy in his muscles to power blinking. freeeaky...
