I'm not sure if this movie was ever talked about on these boards but supposedly it's one of the most sad and depressing movies ever created. Has anyone seen it?

It's an anime movie about two kids two try to survive after the nuclear bombings.

I want to see it, as it's in my favorite form of Media, but I heard the story was a pretty big tear-jerker.

I'm not sure if I can't take that sort of thing right now. -wipes a tear away with his hankie-

I'm pretty sure there was a thread on it a while back, with links to youtube segments. As I said before, I don't normally watch anime, but I love this movie. Things that stick out in my mind were the use of colors and silence and all. Girl has the typical annoying kid voice but other than that it's good.

As if I'm not mopey and whatever as it is. If a battleaxe like my sister says it's a downer flick, I can't do it to myself.

yes, i don't usually cry at movies.

this one was different. both my sister and i were crying silent tears, the worst kind to cry.

I definitely recommend you see this movie. It's emotionally heartbreaking and powerful--a film that will resonate in your conscience well after you've seen it.

an attempt to gain worldwide sympathy for the bombing of hiroshima and nagasaki? no thanks, i'll pass. i support dropping the first atomic bomb on hiroshima. the second atomic bomb on nagasaki was overkill and unnecessary. i hate anime except for hentai anyways.

i really didn't get as much out of this movie as a couple of Chinese friends whom i borrowed the DVD from. i just remember feeling that this was more portrayal of the Japanese as victims in WW2. but yes, i understand that ordinary Japanese citizens did suffer from in the war. the Chinese friends whom i borrowed it from said they cried a lot while watching it. and maybe it's because it was anime that i didn't get as much out of it. i don't watch it regularly.

ok i have to say this.

my ex really really really liked this movie. he always said i should watch it. i finally did and.....i really can't see what the hubbub is about. i mean, did he find it comparable to his upbringing? he has a younger brother...but he's not dead. mom and dad are still alive also. he WAS poor and didn't have enough to eat and once the roof blew off his home. guess i'll never know why. *shrugs*

"grave of the fireflies" is about the tokyo firebombings, more specifically the first one, in kobe. the firebombing of tokyo is much more questionable, being an act of total war: targetting civilian populations as a long-term strategy to curtail production of material. iirc, more civilians were killed in the firebombings than hiroshima and nagasaki combined at least in terms of direct deaths, if not including deaths caused by exposure to radiation. i would put this up there with the firebombing of dresden, germany, considering it was widely known that tokyo was populated mostly by wooden structures, and less stone unlike dresden. it was the basis behind the proposed "bat incindiery bombs" (bats preferring to hide in shaded places... like in rafters) which were not employed only because the nukes were readied first.

...Which is why I didn't say, "You moron! How can you confuse a firebombing with a nuclear detonation?!"

...which is why i didn't say: "settle down, anime nerd. it's just a cartoon; oh my god don't hurt me, i meant to say anime not cartoon."

I think the proper term for that is otaku. Jan!

Also, check out Full Metal Alchemist, which has its share of dark moments. The scene where Hughes' daughter cries out that her daddy still needs to work is pretty manipulative, but damn, if that's not a tearjerker than I don't know what is.

Why do you support the atomic bombing?
