Are the writers making any effort to have the Kim character learn more English?

You must have missed the trailer for Harold and Kumar back in 2004, which jokingly touted the movie starring "That asian guy from American Pie and that indian guy from Van Wilder."

Jokingly? Perhaps half; how many people do you think would have known who they were talking about if they mentioned John Cho and Kal Penn? How many people know who they are now?
Yes - Hollywood insiders (at parties) are surprised that DDK can actually speak English.
Btw, it took 13 yrs. in the industry before DDK actually got to kiss a girl (and he had to play a foreigner for that chance).

I don't understand why DDK is playing the Korean only speaker on lost when his Korean sux. His wife meanwhile is the bilingual one. It'd be better if the roles were reveresed.

^You honestly don't know?
Asian men are always portrayed as more foreign than the women.

Asian-American to be more precise (and a pretty "white-washed" one at that).

Just an honest question, but how?
I dunno much of the guy, and I wanna know how he's white-washed.

asian. asian american. whatever.
he's always going to be cast as the asian guy.
his face isn't going anywhere.
i remember watching that movie wedding planner with j.lo (don't judge)
and i think it was implied that jennifer lopez's character
is non latino but a caucasian. and it was just weird.
especially when she's so vocal about her roots.
anyway. the linked article wasn't all that informative or
eye opening.

I think I remember reading about how he don't speak Korean too good. Had Yun Jin Kim (Sun) help him with pronunciation and all to make his Korean sound more natural -- people were complaining about how horrible his Korean was early on in the season. I have to say though, Hurley's attempt was one of the most painful renditions I've heard.

I don't know about that, and think it depends on the role. There's a difference between him playing a role that was specifically written for an asian character, and him playing a character that any ethnicity could play. And, some of his previous roles, were characters that could have been easily originally written for an white actor.

I have to agree with this.
It was wrong about his career arc, when it stated it had previously been mostly limited to being an extra.
And, this part in the article just made me want to laugh out "ha, ha":
But don’t worry, there is a grand plan in all this. The writers of the show are most definitely not lost (couldn’t resist that!).
Anybody who's still watching the show knows that the writers are just making up this shit as they go along.
yes. do tell.
I didn't mean "whitewashed" in the negative sense - just that he grew up in Easton, PA (in the Lehigh Valley region), which isn't exactly a hotbed for Asian-Americans (about 1.6% Asian) and got his education at Haverford and Bryn Mawr (which also aren't Asian-Am hotbeds - esp. when he attended them).

with his greasy hair, he can almost pass for latino and maybe possibly get latino roles in tv and film!
