Riverdale Christian Academy students & faculty get their prom on by playing catch the runaway slave.
This is not merely a theatrical production emulating fictional characters, but a purposeful demonstration of disregard for the seriousness of the black American slave experience. It trivializes slavery, it celebrates the ungodly and unfounded Biblical justification of this Era (similar reasoning used in stripping land for Native Americans and the encampment of Japanese-Americans during WW II), and further characterizes rural and small town America as unwelcoming to people of color.

seriously. wtf. i'm just so.....flabbergasted and stunned that if i were to open my mouth right now, only swear words would come out. this just cemented my complete and utter disdain for people. there was a little glimmer of hope, that there was still some good in mankind, but this....*shrugs* i give up.

I am. I would expect something like this to take place in the South, but then again, I never lived in CA so.......

wow, really? man, i must be much more cynical than i thought...i just took this all in stride when i read it. but it's probably because of all the blackface parties i've read about, and a stupid costume party at my own college.
i've read about many parties also, and even my own sister had something similar take place at her school (tacos and tequila party---take a guess what THAT entailed). i feel this way BECAUSE there are still some people that just don't get it...and never will apparently.
I already saw this earlier elsewhere, I found this comment to be pretty good on the situation:
"Ladies and gentlemen, the terrifying prospect is that this is part of a cultural and political tide that is sweeping us back in time toward Jim Crow. That way of thinking and the capacity to do things that way was not destroyed. If we can't forge a viable new Civil Rights Movement we need to look at the alternatives and get hustling."

I love the comments saying that blacks already degrade themselves so why should these people feel like they're doing anything wrong. Gotta love that logic.

haha. it's as if that's the only thing they learned from the Imus scandal. And people seem to use this a lot re: degradation of women too..

I could care less what they do. To me they're just being exactly who they are. But I decided to post this since they were "catching the runaway slaves" and all that. It talks about a question that used to bother me when I was little.
