This season, there's two more asians on the show.
The female is Sarah Nguyen, but it doesn't seem like she'll be around for a long time the way the first episode edited her. The other chefs were given a background story, and that was missing with Nguyen. But, according to her bio, she finished at the top of her culinary class and got an internship at Per Se.
Then, there's Hung who seems like he's going to be the villian this time around. But, from his first challenge, the guy can really cook.
there's a dude from chicago. on the first show, he was in the bottom 4. he better start representin' and stop acting like dave from the first season. he totally reminds me of him...nervous, intimidated, sweaty, etc.

just from the first episode alone, i'd say that micah, hung, and tre will make it into the final four.

At least that is what I've been told in 100 different ways by quite a few Californians.

Geez, you two should get a room and get it over with.
With Hung, I don't know if he's really an asshole or just playing that up because he knows that will give more airtime to promote himself. Not cleaning after himself was a serious breach in kitchen etiquette. But, he also stepped in and helped others when he didn't have to such as reminding that she would have gone over the budget if she had bought all that meat for her dish.

so the finale is coming up. in the previous two seasons, i think the show portrayed the final two as a "good guy" vs. "bad guy" kind of competition where the "good guy" ultimately wins. my prediction for this season is that Casey and Hung will be the final two, with Casey being the "good guy" and Hung being the "bad guy", and Casey winning in the end.
Hung is my favourite contestant, but he's gotten the "bad guy" edit from the beginning. granted he himself said in the beginning that he was an asshole, he still has worked very well in teams, and really Howie was a lot easier to hate.
hung is a cocky bastard, especially when he had an extra 30 minutes to prepare and everyone else was standing around watching him. but he IS very entertaining to watch, with his awesome knife skills.

Hung's got a really interesting backstory.
His dad had trained american forces during the Vietnam War, and was tortured for that. His dad escaped, and joined with the rest of his family where they fled Vietnam in a boat. Somehow, that story got picked up in the paper, and Arlo Gunthrie read about it and sponsored Hung's family and moved them to Mass where they opened up a little Vietnamese restaurant where Hung grew up and learned his skills.

I don't know about that. For TC2, was Ilan really the 'good guy', especially after his involvement with that horrible incident where they pinned down Marcel? To me, Ilan always came off as a little bit creepy with his obsession towards Marcel as if Marcel had spurned Ilan's love interests. And, after that attack by Cliff, Marcel came off less like the 'bad guy' and more like the victim.
There was no really no 'good guy' along the lines of Harold from Season1. Its funny that he totally understood the game of reality TV and acted out of character to get selected for the show where he was really obnoxious and arrogant. And, once on the show, he went back to normal even though that pissed off the producers. But, it was the fact that he was non-obnoxious that viewers loved the guy.

Well, one could say that S1's Tiffany was the bad guy. She's a snake, SSSSSSSS!

yeah, Ilan was no angel. but Marcel definitely got most of the "cocky bastard" edit. even Elia did not like him in the finale, although she had no problem with him throughout the season.

oh there was actually a lot of hate for Tiffany in season one, from what i understand. and it's evident even in that her assistant chefs in the finale didn't want her to win.
i'm guessing that Casey and Hung will be the final two, and the show will be edited as if nobody on the show likes Hung (regardless of how much that may or may not reflect reality).

who the hell are those fat white women who came out together with Hung's family to congradulate him?
Hung was the winner which was no big suprise. All of the great chefs who guested near the last three episodes all picked Hung as the chef they said could work where they work. It showed clearly he was head and shoulders above the rest before the finals even began.
The more interesting part of the show was how the hosts and guest chef Anthony Bourdain kept maintaining that Hung had to cook Vietnamese food and show the "soul" in his cooking. Hung was 100% correct when he said that it was stupid to suggest this. If Hung is the best technical chef, then he is the best chef. Hung pointed out that when people eat out they don't comment, "Wow! the food sure tasted like it had soul put into it", rather they make comments like "This fish was cooked perfectly" In other words skill and technique over the mythological idea of "soul" being put into the food. Hung is a great chef. As he stated, why should I have to cook sweet and sour because I am Asian. I am trained in French classical cuisine. (History lesson to Bourdain and Tom C.. Vietnam was under French control for many years and of course French cuisine had a great influence in Vietnam. You can't jump all over Hung because he did not make the dishes you wanted him to make.) In spite of the judges missing that critical point in Hung's background, I think they all knew way ahead that Hung would win. After all Bourdain predicted Hung the winner back when he wrote his blog when Joey got voted off. That was like eight chefs ago.

Bourdain has had a huge Vietnamese food fetish ever since his trip to Vietnam.

too formulaic?
I'm glad he won!
Watching that final, it was funny that the only dish of Casey's that the judges praised was the one that was actually made by Howie. The judges praised Dale's scallop but it was made by C.J. It was obvious Hung made all of his dishes. Hung proved to be a team player working with Rocco and also Sara in the final. He was professional and courteous with the waitstaff always saying please and thank you when they took stuff out. It proved all the morons wrong when they said he was not a team player. Not only is Hung this year's top chef, but I bet if he squared off against the season one winner and season two winner he would win that as well.

Very true - ethnicity or nationality should have nothing to do with what a chef cooks or is expected to cook.
Would Bourdain say the same for a black or white American (of non-French background) trained in French cooking (that they should be bringing African or American flavors to their cooking)?

he should have his own show where all he does is comment on
dishes cooked just for him by whoever wants to cook... for him...
something like that.
his comments slay me. "it tastes like plastic doll head"
hilar!
Bourdain's funniest moment was when he told C.J. that his broccolini couldn't even be served in a prison cafeteria. That is how bad it was.
That Casey was a real back stabbing witch after all. Over in her interview at www.chow.com she blamed her loss on the fact that Hung and Dale did not work for a month for the final and she had to work the whole time. She said altitude was to blame and it was unfair for someone from Dallas to have to contend with. She said the judges did not give credit for her past wins yada, yada, yada.
You know Dale is from Chicago and Hung works in Las Vegas. Both places are not high altitude towns yet, apparently they did not have the same problems old Casey had. Hung has as many wins as Casey so her idea that her resume was somehow stronger on the show was not correct. Finally, I think her idea that Hung and Dale not working for a month before the finals somehow gave them an edge is crazy. Casey would have the advantage of being practiced whereas the other guys would be trying to get back into the swing of it. She will be as forgotten as her Jennifer Aniston hairdo with an attitude like that. I am damn glad she lost.
