Hey guys,
It's been a while since I posted regularly, so hope you're all good.

I'm moving to New York next month, staying out for a year with work, and will need to find accomodation. I don't want to stay somewhere dodgy, and ideally, would like a one-bedroom apartment. My company is willing to give me the money to cover rent, but I need to give them a figure. What are the average rent prices, and which areas are decent?

Thanks a lot!!

PG

is there a limit to how much they're willing to pay? casue if money's not an issue, you can live in a decently sized one bedroom apt in manhattan for around 2000 a month. it's definitely expensive but you're living in the freakin city!

Depends where you're working (not meant to be stalker-y, but this would affect your commute and thus where you want to live). Would it be in Manhattan or one of the boroughs, and where in Manhattan would it be (uptown, downtown, east/westside or midtown?)

Craigslist is your friend, btw.

Good to see a couple of NY posters - I'll be friendless when I arrive, so it'd be good to meet some friendly faces.

I think 'cos of my job, I have to be in Manhattan, and I'm trying to get work to give me a decent figure. Currently, they are talking about $1,200 per month, but I've spoken to colleagues and they say I need around $2,500. So fingers crossed!

For 1200 in Manhattan, you'll probably have to get some sort of shared apartment, maybe a converted 1 bedroom where part of the living room is turned into a bedroom. Something like that.

Rents for a studio/efficiency start at about 1500 and escalate rather quickly.

NYC, I mean Manhattan, is filled with non-New Yorkers

As a long time Long Islander, I must agree. Some people on LI are terrified of the city... beats me why.

My grandfather owns some apartments in midtown if you can afford them.

57th and park.

think it was like 2500-4000 a month.

What part of LI are you from? I ask because I find myself in the middle of the island.

Even if you're working in Manhattan, you can live in the other boroughs (except Staten Island) and commute. A whole lot of people do this. It would be easier if your place is close to the city.

But hey, if money is not an issue, definitely go for Manhattan.

Near Brooklyn's Downtown is a decent area. Very close to the A train I think?

Brooklyn + A Train never computes with me.

Oh you're coming from London? We have a growing Dubstep scene here! It's like you never left home (sans crazy teenage pregnancy rates).

LOL! I also need to find some place that serves decent dim sum and good ol' fish and chips

I can't believe how quickly time is flying. Looks like I'll be there in 2 weeks time...eek!!

I used to commute from Staten Island to school everyday. If you're working in lower Manhattan, SI is closer than the Bronx or the East end of Queens.

Where I live in Brooklyn Heights is within 3 blocks of the A, C, M, R, 4, 5, 2, and 3. And all the trains are 1 or 2 stops from Manhattan. Hell, on nice days I walk to Manhattan.

Well, just arrived today and will take a couple of days out to take a breather and sort myself out with a bank account, before I start looking for places. Been told to focus around Midtown, and am trying to get the company to pay for brokers' fees.

If anyone's in the area and fancies meeting (and welcoming) a Londoner to the delights of the city, including a good place for duck rice and dim sum, please get in touch.

Thanks!!

Well, I've been here for a week now and I signed a lease for a flat - oops sorry, apartment - and got the keys y'day. I now have a NY address. Woo hoo!

Now I just need to find furniture...then I can move in!

I was not allowed to reveal this until you got a NY address.

BTW which borough are you in now?

Pookie_gal

Why couldn't you reveal that 'til I got a NY addy?

I'm in Midtown. Quite a good location, at least I think - I'm really chuffed  It's in between Columbus Circle, Central Park, Time Sq, Restaurant Row and Broadway.

That's cool, is that close to downtown, I'm not familiar with the geography since I don't go to the city that often.

Brooklyn Heights is in downtown Brooklyn. Great area and soon enough it'll be 1 subway stop to the Nets.
