View Full Version : The increasing popularity of Asian Women
Newtybar

So have you guys noticed that the popularity of Asian women has increased tremendously as of late and Asian males are still considered serious, boring, nerds with funny accents? Being all over TV, magazines, and other media has increased their integration into this society tremendously. I don't know if their increased exposure in media has lead to their acceptance and "in" factor within this society or whether the fact that they were "in" already leading to the media exposure. I hope it is the former and not the latter.. because I have a plan.
MTV has the power to brainwash the masses into thinking anything is cool or "in"
Well my plan is now slightly distorted but it originally started with finding a cool Asian guy to get on the show and show the world that yes we too can be elite and not just 1337.... but now I am going to be homeless soon and will need a place to live. I'm not cool in any way, but hey im not super serious either... and I figure just getting Asian faces out there will do sooooomething to lead us to this status...(yes everything is motivated towards getting women):
So yeah the real world has a voting thing now where people can vote for the final cast member... help me get on this show! Yes I know the real world is lame and full of stereotypical archetypes, but hey it's a cool experience and this is the chance for a non super good looking non super cool guy to get up on this show. Here's my profile...(Im pretty sure you can sign up with a fake email to vote)
realworldcasting.com/people/Newtybar
You can use a fake email when registering so don't worry about SPAM. I know the idea isn't super original, but this time, people vote for members of the cast. We have the power, not the casting directors!
Remember... Be a man/woman...do the right thing!

I think you'd rep Asian guys really well. Good luck!

Asian women have always been more accepted in American society as they're viewed as less threatening whereas the men are a threat to the white male power structure.
Makes perfect sense imo.

This is false. In fact in 1800s Asian, basically Chinese, women were banned from immigration while Chinese males were allowed as workers.
Asian women are no more prominent now than 10 years ago but over the past 10 years there has been an increase in Asian MALE media representation in sports, baseball and basketball, and several TV shows.
Still rare but increasing slowly.
I think to many Americans Asian males are at best just watered down versions of White guys whereas Asian females are considered at least as appealing as the average White woman.
American media and minorities = black male up/ Asian male down/ Hispanic out/ black female up if light or mixed/ Asian female up if small thin and cute (except for M. Cho)/black female out if she is dark, unmixed and too "negroid" (except as a guest or audience member on Springer or Maury).

Take the time to apply a cluebat to your head. You know what he meant: 20th century, when the Asian population slowly became large enough to begin to constitute a threat. As for the ban on Chinese female immigration... you know that the only reason they even let Chinese males in was for cheap labor for the Transcon' Railroad. If females weren't allowed over, their reasoning was either (a) they'd all move back eventually, or (b) they'd die out.
@Newtybar: post on YW some more and maybe I'll think about voting... though as it looks now, you don't stand much of a chance.

Here is an observation. Usually couples tend to be within the same ballpark in terms of physical attractiveness. The exception to the rule seems to be AF/WM pairing where in many cases the guy is just fugly by comparison. IMO, the American media is the cause since it encourages the perception that a) ANY WM is a step up the dating ladder for the girl, and b) AFs are obtainable by ANY WM.
Interestingly, AMs in Europe are not stereotyped in the same way as they are in the US, maybe because the Asian population just isn't large enough to pose a threat to anyone. Conversely, you see a lot more AM/WM couples, and you rarely see decent looking AFs with fugly WMs.

the issue of Chinese female immigration is a little more complicated than that. merchant class Chinese immigrants that were actually not citizens could sponsor their wives to come over. it was the Chinese immigrants with citizenship that could not sponsor for their wives to come over.
anyway, that Chinese women were not allowed to immigrate or naturalise was not so much discrimination on Asian women - it was discrimination on the Chinese race in general. and i'm specifically saying "Chinese" here because no such restriction was placed on Japanese women at the time of the Chinese Exclusion Acts. it was discrimination on the Chinese race in general because the point was that the government did not want an increase in a Chinese population with American citizenship.
this is not to say that Asian women were more or less accepted than Asian men in the past. they were stereotyped and legally discriminated against just the same. they were thought of as morally corrupt prostitutes who would poison the white gene pool.

I only recently found out about the online voting. I stopped watching the Real World years ago due to the generic characters on the show. The competition has been going on for a month and I signed up on Saturday. Since then the site has been down about 70% of the time.
In actuality it may not be as bleak as it seems. I only need 1,000 votes to reach round 2 which starts in 2 days. I had hoped if I spread the word enough people would vote, but my/our generation seems to suffer from massive ADD. I believe it resets at round 2 (besides many of the leaders hacked to get there).
A) They log on and the site is down.. they say they will come back later and vote....and forget... or
B) They see you have to register and subsequently worry about spam (they didn't read the part about using a bogus email).
I have gotten most of my close friends to vote and some of their close friends... but alas I do not have 500 close friends. That would be amazing though.
Thank you for reading this and taking the time to look at the profile.
I will be posting here more often, I'm a forum whore!

Newtybar, kudos on your enthusiasm, but I can't support any involvement with The Real World. They will edit the hell out of whatever you do and make you look like a bad guy. From what I've seen of that show, you're either you're a crazy white person partying 24/7, or the token minority who's killing the buzz (or chasing white girls if you are black). I don't mean to be a defeatist, just saying the odds are slim and none you help more than hurt.

nameless... I'm not quite sure you are correct. I see your logic in probabilities and the editing, but they can't edit everything. I still believe it is worth a shot. Any exposure to an Asian person without the accent and extreme seriousness would do some good. At least I hope, alas I am not a pessimist.
We don't know unless we try.
To that end, I am not giving up on getting votes until this competition ends.

I agree on any non-stereotypical exposure being positive. I'm just afraid it won't turn out as well as you hope. The Real World is a different beast compared to other reality shows. You're going to have to act like those crazy white guys if you want to be seen on an equal level. Deranged, I know, but this is an MTV audience we're talking about (ya know, stupid kids).
You also better be getting hella pussy. If not, come confession booth time, it'd be too easy for the director to make the others comment on your game / sexuality. MTV loves pushing the nerdy and/or gay Asian guy image. See, it's that easy.
Newtybar
06-05-2007, 05:57 PM
Valid points. I may not get seen as much and will get cut out a lot, but if I am on at all that is some exposure, no matter how little it is. They can't edit me out of the entire show. As far as not getting pussy. Given our current public opinion, I probably won't get as much as the other guys. But I can show that we do have a sense of humor and that can go a long ways. Small steps. I'm not saying I'm the perfect being and want to be the representative of Asian males hahahah... but hey we need a start somewhere and hopefully there will be others... better looking... cooler etc later on.

Hey guys, new to the forum. AM, mid 30s.
While I agree that the media favors AF's much more than AMs, I don't think they promote them that much. It's been more of a Latina thing for the past 5 years. You have J-Lo, Shakira, Eva Menedez, Eva Longoria, Penelope Cruz, Salma Hayek, Christina Aguelira, Jessica Alba, ALL the top supermodels & victoria secret models. Granted alot of these Latinas look white, but it would seem Latinas are the IT minority girls not Asians.

This is false. In fact in 1800s Asian, basically Chinese, women were banned from immigration while Chinese males were allowed as workers.
As other have already noted - it was a way of keeping the Chinese population down in the US (combination of "natural" population growth and Chinese males eventually having to return to China in order to have a family).
Asian women are no more prominent now than 10 years ago but over the past 10 years there has been an increase in Asian MALE media representation in sports, baseball and basketball, and several TV shows.
Are you mad??
There have been signifcantly more AF actors as regulars on TV shows (playing Asian-Americans, btw) than AM actors (who still largely play foreigners or FOBs).
And while there has been a definite increase in AMs in professional sports - most of them are not Asian-Americans.

Take a look at newscasts in major metro areas and on national cable news networks (AF anchor after AF anchor, otoh, AM anchors?).
On cable shows - there are numerous AFs who are hosts of shows ranging from tech shows to real estate shows to decorating shows to music/pop culture, etc.
In addition, AFs pop up all the time in advertising/commercials (usually partnered with a WM).

Can't argue with you there. Asian women probably get 2-3 times the face time as Asian men on American television. Maybe more?
The average marketing ad typically uses one token Black man & Asian woman surrounded by a group of Whites.

An AM on TV as an important character would be offensive almost.
For the first time I see Chow Yung Fat as a bad guy, and its on American film. Other than Jet Li and Jackie Chan, I don't recall seeing any important roles given to AMs...atleast recently. They are also showing more AsianFemale-WhiteMale relationships on TV too. The racist and stereotype wall is still standing. In front of AMs atleast. This was what Bruce Lee was trying to tear down in his years of films. I wish he was still alive.

Note that all the AMs you mentioned are FOREIGNERS (with mostly a martial arts background in film).
AFs, at least in significant roles, have been primarily portrayed as Asian-Americans.

Yea, and American born AMs are almost nowhere to be found.
Probably because they don't have accents for people to laugh at.
Look at all the fast and furious movies. OMG.... violent characters
....angry asian men.

If you count 1st gen Asian-Americans, Asian couples drastically outnumber AF/WM couples.
There, in fact, have been more AF/BM pairings on TV than AF/AM and there still hasn't been an Asian-Am female/male pairing (Jin and Sun on "Lost" are foreigners).
In addition - the disparity bwtn AF/WM and AM/WF (for those US born/raised) is at roughly a 2:1 ratio, however, TV/film makes it seem as if it only AF/WM couplings exist.
But then again - that's secondary, I'd rather see depictions of Asian-American couples first.

I recall the Animatrix.....AF/BM....the asian guy sitting in the corner doing control stuff.
I see more asian women like Betty Nguyen and other Asian newscasters ion weekend CNN. There is a Latino lady who looks a great deal Asian, with her upswept eyes and darker skinn tone.
I liek watching the news with Betty Nguyen. She is hot. There was an event where they were discussing HAPAs, and she gave her own account. her father iwas an American GI. It is interesting she took her mother's name.
Her co-broadcaster is a black dude. For some reason, Media Executives in film, news, tv, etc. have this thing where Black Male and Any-Non-Black-Women teaming seem to be the norm these days.

on a different note, usually its the women who can enter the dominant culture easier.. its sexism if you think about, because they assume women will just blend into the dominant culture and society will continue on as normal. it's like this in korea too. a foreign male can't become a citizen, but a foreign woman can become a korean citizen if they marry a korean male citizen. the korean govt assumes that the women will just blend into the dominant korean culture.
