So my current humid residence is making my pores get bigger and bigger. Any tips/home remedies/products (especially any of you familiar with Asian brands/products) on how to make not let them be huge?
I've been naturally blessed with nice skin, in a dry environment anyway, and now it's getting kind of not so great as the weather gets more disgusting. Now I am like wtf do I do about my pores.
don't they have those biore pore strips over there? i use that shit all the time, fuckin awesome.

Don't those just suck all the dirty shit out of the pores of your nose possibly making them bigger? I used them once back in California and totally dried out my skin, but I don't suppose that will be a problem here. I'll pick some up tomorrow and try them out.

"In cosmetics, toner refers to a lotion designed to cleanse the skin and shrink pores, usually used on the face. Some people dispute whether toner is actually necessary, and prefer to use plain water instead."

laugh all you want steve, i'll be getting the ladies in the end with my nice smooth skin.
moisturizer...
toner...

i only do it once a week at most....your pores aren't gonna be that dirty every single day unless you live next to a smokestack or soemthing.
toner is a liquid with a mild cleanser in it and is used to lock in moisture to your skin. this plus using moisturizer in the end helps to prevent wrinkles.....DUH!

I know some people that swear by NuSkin mudmask and aloe vera moisturizer for dealing with hot + humid. You could always try SKII.
I personally like Aveda products but don't know many other people that do. It's part of the Estee Lauder fru-fru aromatherapy line. If for some reason you like Aveda or want to try it there's a nice store in Jing Hua Cheng, lower level.
Oh, one product I like to use is a spray moisturizer with NaPCA. It may or may not help with the pores but it's a nice, light moisturizer. I'm not brand loyal on that. While I'm no expert on a lot of brands there I do like really, really like the Johnson's PH 5.5 line.
I digress. Bottom line is a nice mudmask might help a bit, and if not it at least feels good. I'd also moderately advocate a light moisturizer with NaPCA. Never been big on toner but maybe I have shitty skin because I'm not. *shrug*

isn't it TRAPPER john?
anyway, good thread. i use those pore strips. so far, i've been blessed with nice clear skin. never had to use toner, astringent, etc. i've tried mud masks and i just like how they feel afterward....really tightens up the skin and removes excess oil and dirt.

Only if you're not blessed with naturally smooth skin like me  Anyhow, I'm a geek. When someone says 'toner', I first think 'printers'.

Haha my skin always gets PWnZed whenever I go to humid places like Hong Kong, Malaysia and South China. (south of the Yangzi) Geez what the hell is up with the humidity? It gets SO BAD I can ONLY wear shorts or else my legs will have all these itchy welts all over the place, its pretty embarrasing. I don't know how the hong kong businessmen can wear formal suits and pants without dying in that climate.

I recommend reading The Beauty Bible by Paula Begoun. Despite the tongue-in-cheek sounding title, all the advice is based on science.
I remember reading something in there that said it's useless to try and close pores because they contract and expand on their own. Most 'pore closing' acidic substances put on the face only irritate the skin, causing areas to swell up in reaction and minimize the appearance of pores and wrinkles. But of course it's so bad for you'll break out with acne sooner or later. So the only solution is to cover it up with make-up or get rid of the blackheads that make pores more visible. Liquid make-up isn't great for large pores because it tends to pool into them and make them visible. So a liquid-to-powder or cream foundation may work best if you choose to conceal them.

my sister read this statistic where
it said that if a woman wears make up everyday
she ingests about 5lbs of it through her pores annually.
that is THE GROSS!

Whoa... yeah, that's really gross. And also consider the fact that loose particles cling to adhesive surfaces so if you're wearing lip gloss in, say, downtown Seoul, you're swallowing that gunk everyday.

aw that's gross!!!
And how do you remove blackheads?
urbia

The best way to remove blackheads is through chemical exfoliation, choosing a substance that is slightly acidic so it loosens dead skin, dirt, and other undesired gunk enough to be washed away with facial cleanser. Beta hydroxy acids will clean within the pores as well as surface of the skin, while alpha hydroxy acids only clean the surface. Physically exfoliating is so much harsher 'cause you're scratching your face with ground up nut shells or whatever and it isn't uniformly effective. It's not just enough to get something containing beta hydroxy acids, though, you have to get a product with the right concentration and pH. Too much does you no good and too little does you no good.

I used to have enlarged pores, but after dedicated skincare everyday (with cleanser, toner sometimes, and moisturizer) for the last year and a half, my skin has cleared out and my pores have shrunk. It helps to use cold water when you wash your face. Hot water makes your pores enlarge.

Old thread, but since skin care is my grand passion, I am gonna chime in. I used to be really big on manual exfoliating (bought biore strips in bulk from HK!), and use peel off masks religiously. After becoming more educated in skin care, I realized that all this can actually cause skin damage such as sagging.
I recommend that you use pearl powder products and definitely some sort of retinoid product if you can stand it. retin-a/retinol/retinoids are the only skin care ingredient scientifically proven to reduce pore size, wrinkles, freckles/melasma and other skin woes. I have reduced pore size now and smoother skin than ever. I am not one of those ladies blessed with super nice skin but with diligence and great products, everyone says i have glowing skin.

try green tea mask!
mix green tea in powder form + flour + water in a pastelike consistency and put it on your face. rinse it off when it dries (~15min)
the next morning your face will look taut and clean!

Also, apple cider vinegar (not flavored with) plus water to make a toner. tightens pores and controls oil.
