SF-based independent filmmaker Ellen Bruno’s films combine extraordinary visual and sound artistry with often disturbing political realities. Much of her work deals with human rights abuses in the Far East, where she documents hidden worlds unseen by Westerners. Rather than wallowing in despair, though, Bruno’s films are about healing and compassion. Tonight we present her trilogy of recent work. Ellen Bruno in person.
Sacrifice examines the selling of Burmese girls (some as young as 12) into prostitution in Thailand; Leper introduces a society of lepers in a remote village in Nepal, victims of a disease that has ravaged people’s lives since ancient times; and Sky Burial (funded by YBCA) records a Tibetan monastery ritual in which corpses are consumed by huge vultures, allowing the cycle of life to continue as the spirits of the deceased merge with the sky.
