apparently this vegan couple unintentionally starved their 6-week-old baby to death by feeding him only soy milk and apple juice. i don't get it, did they not think to breast feed him? or is that against the vegan lifestyle?

that's total stupidly negligence on their part. the baby might have already malnutrition while in the womb, now compounded by their negligence, it made it worse. they should have asked for help.
from what i heard vegans don't drink milk, so i guess breastfeeding was not an option for them.

how could they have not known he was in danger if he was 3 lbs?

seems like there's plenty of info raising a vegan baby:

they were just negligent.

How can you be guilty of malice murder, felony murder, AND involuntary manslaughter?

the article said it's just no animal products, so breast feeding should have been fine. and isn't baby food just mashed carrots and stuff?

still, i think giving them a life sentence is stupid. negligent as they were, you don't need to send two people to be w/ murderers and rapists. i wish forced sterilizations were allowed. they learn their lesson, won't be able to do it again, and you keep two taxpayers.

lol, unless the parents thought the kid would be exploiting the mom by suckling on her teets.

When I read the names, I started getting kind of curious and decided to google; and check it out:

When I first read it, the sentence seemed kind of harsh, and upon learning that the couple was Af Am, I'm starting to question why the sentence was so harsh...but I dunno, I could be wrong -- is this kind of punishment usual in such/similar cases? Because dang, I can see some heavy punishment for starving your child (more so if it were intentional), but this seems way overboard.

Uh, no. Mom is not a cow. That's not a lifestyle choice anyhow it's a slow painful death for your newborn. You know as a mom the cry your baby lets out when he's hungry and they are actually well equipped to detect mother's milk plus latch on.

The woman (I refuse to call her mom) would have had to most likely refuse attempts to feed at least 12-20 times a day. Higher end because the kid must've been hungry.

I think forcing a kid (not baby) to be vegan is a little messed up but I wouldn't insult vegans by calling this couple vegans. I live in Oregon and there are a LOT of vegans here, including restaurants. They usually know their shit when it comes to kids and nutrition and are usually huge breastfeeding advocates. I've never seen anything vegan related that advocates using soy milk and apple juice. It also says on most soy milk packages that it is not adequate to feed a baby. They're not equipped to digest it.

I need to read something else to calm down.

There is a soy formula. So even if they believed that breastmilk is bad for the baby there was a choice even by their unfathomable standards.

Poor kid. Rest in peace, kiddo.

it wasn't unintenional. you can't starve a baby unintentionally. a baby's need to feed are pretty clear when they're hungry and 3.5 lbs at 6 weeks? they never took him to a doctor even if they were dumb fucks and didnt know 3.5 lbs at 6 weeks is low; the doctor would've told them that he was way way below the percentile chart in terms of weight. the sentence is well deserved and on top of that the both of them should be sterilized.

i guess the question on intent really comes down to - are they really believably that stupid? they've been maintaining that they did not mean to starve their child, but it's very fishy when they never even took the baby to see a doctor until he died.

i guess the question on intent really comes down to - are they really believably that stupid?they could be given an iq test. if their iq is low... like in the low 70s, then maybe they really were just that stupid. otherwise, the judge gets to through the book at them.

Even old mother hubbard had more in her cupboard to feed her kids than these two.

For three weeks that lil one suffered, man....I'm feel so sorry for the kid.
To make a life choice for yourself and not research it is one thing, but to not research your decision and then make that choice for your kid.....yeah. Go away and don't have any more kids.

I don't really care how they're punished. Nothing now will do anything to abate that little one's suffering. Nothing.

My guess is that, assuming they weren't mentally deficient, drugs. It's the only thing that could allow them to tune out a starving, dying infant's cries, attempts to feed, digesting problems from lack of usable food, lack of proper bowel movements, probably diarrhea, possible bloody diarrhea.

What kills me is that I've had to throw away some milk because I produced too much and my kid won't touch anything in a bottle. Yeah, most of it went to preemies but what went down the drain could have made that little guy thrive. It's not just food, they need touch, to know mom and dad are there to keep him or her safe.

I bet they had more than soy milk and apple juice every day.
