Just curious. Do you own a toaster only or a kick ass toaster oven? The kind god intended to cook up mochi super crispy on the outside and white hot but tender on the inside.

Toaster oven, which neither toasts very well or works as a oven very well either. It doesn't seem Chinese really use ovens that much. My parents' oven never worked, but they didn't seem to mind since they never used it.

Toasteroven.

I makes poptarts ok. I makes my frozen potpie top crusts flaky, just how I like it.

toaster.

LOL...it's really funny how every chinese home i go to, the oven and dishwasher are used as extra cabinet space.

Hahah. (Ducks his head in shame)

Only because there are no older generation folks around, and I'm perpetuating the use of these "extra dish racks" even though I hated taking clean dishes out of the toaster oven before using it.

aren't toaster ovens called toasters in japan?

i think i have a ghetto toaster oven. i usually have to let the mochi go through 2 toasting cycles.

a 2 cm dab of soy sauce on the top/center of the piece of mochi will allow it to puff out from the top (and not underneath or sideways). keeps it from burning on the grid.

Neither. I used to have a toaster oven (that I got free from somebody else) but got rid of it when I moved in 2003.

I use both my toaster oven and oven on a regular basis. There's some AMAZING and quick stuff you can do with a toaster oven.

Take portobello mushrooms and asparagus and put them in the toaster oven pan.

Drizzle with olive oil and a hint of balsamic vinegar.

Add salt, pepper, a little bit of crushed garlic (garlic powder if you're in a hurry), and a little bit of chilli powder.

Toast for... however long it takes for it to brown the edges.

It's 15 minutes total from start of prep to eating for me, and it's deceptively good that people will think you spend a lot longer on it than you did.

And without toaster ovens, how do you make bagel pizzas?

I have a toaster oven, but it's not very kick-ass.
