I learned the whole shebang (how to calculate points and all). Unfortunately I can't open the plugin here at work. Will try it at home later. You should also try to play it in Yahoo Games. You play with actual people and you can tell them to "hurry the eff up" and "3 pts and up please" "No Chicken!!!"....LOL Ahh I miss playing mahjong..

I can't even load this silly thing because I'm at work. Is it the matching game or the actual game of Mahjong where you get to play a person/AI?
Would be funny to get a YW Mahjong night. I can imagine Kim with a visor on with some casino's name on the bill, and a cigarette hanging out of her lip while she's washing/shuffling the tiles. LOL

I got a killer set. But I don't know how to use it. The husband isn't too keen on a mahjong playing wife. If I ever do though I'm gonna motor on down to Chinatown and hustle.

^--Lol, I don't know why, but I have this image of Kim as the Landlady from Kung Fu Hustle, while playing Mahjong. I crack me up.
P.S. I'm sorry, Kim. I'm really really sorry. >_<
anyone hear of those automatic mahjong washing tables? cost about $1000 or so.
anyway, as i told sai lo, i taught my 5yo cousin how to play. he has a crush on me now.

i love REAL LIFE mahjong. my parents, my brother, and i played - just the four of us - on mother's day until 2 in the morning. we would have continued into the night, but we had mother's day dimsum the following day.
so interesting tidbit: my dad told me that, when his white buddies play, instead of saying "eat" or "chi" when they win, they yell out, "mahjong!" kinda like "Bingo!" funny and annoying at the same time.
Adaon

....that's annoying....
But I've run into it.
I looked at my friend funny and told her that she didn't win until she declared it in cantonese. My friends laughed. She threw a tile at my head.
Needless to say, girls can call it "Canasta" with me and win, and I'll have nothing to say anymore.

i want to be able to say the following in a game one day. can someone tell me what they all mean? they just sound cool to me.
"sik wu. seung laht."
"sik. 13 (sup sahm) yieu)." (1,9 of each suit, and one of every other tile.)
"ji-moh" is self- touch, an extra point or "fahn"
"liku liku" wth? it's from kungfu mahjong and other mahjong movies.
what are other combos?
you've never "ji moh"? i have a couple of times. there are lots of other combos, stuff that's really rare to get. you really have to watch and remember what other people throw out.
Adaon

SiK - is the declaration of winning in cantonese.
Ji-Moh - is when you draw your winning tile, as compared to getting from someone's discard. It means the players each pay more of a penalty as compared to when you draw from a player's discard and that player pays the penalty for letting you win.
I'm trying to daydream back to when my mom and her four sisters played, but all I can remember is the hen clucking from them when the games went on, and the brushing off of anyone remotely male away from the table, kids and husbands especially. The nieces were expected to sit and watch and partake in the gossip while learning the game.
I thought the Suhp Sam Yieu (13 .....) was when you got each of the directional winds and 1 thru 9 of one of the suits.
i once got yelled at because i didn't declare a tile as mine before taking it. i just shrugged and said "meh...i'm a jook sing. what do you expect?"

I hate being called jook sing. On that note, in one game, I was called a jook sing in cantonese coversation over the game. Il purposely mispronounced the words when I picked up someone's discarded tile and I called "Mah-Jong" when I won. I've only done this once, but the sheer look of annoyance was worth it.

"sik. 13 (sup sahm) yieu)." (1,9 of each suit, and one of every other tile.)
As in 1 & 9 of each suit respectively, each of the winds, and the 3 "dragons" or whatever (Green, Red, White Dragons?)
Hmm. That's news to me.

I got Dai Seung Gung before, but I got smacked upside the head by my mom for not callin' it right. I got pushed away from the table ever since.
I now know why. Lack of terminology

do you jook sings know how to count how much money you'd win or lose in a round? let's say your base is $2, how much money would you lose if someone won with 3 fahn, not on a ji moh, and with no flowers?
and do you know how many fahn are in the different winning sets?
(without looking at the Wikipedia article now!)

If I were the one that threw out the card, I'd owe $16. But if we were playing moon cheen ching, I'd owe $36. Right or wrong?
yeah when we play, my mom does the counting. she just tells me, 2 red, 1 green or whatever combination i need to pay.

i know the different fahns (sorta) cause my parents are teaching me. if it's 3 fahn, not on a ji moh & no flowers, it would be $8 from everyone except the person who chut chung, who would be paying $16, right?

dai say hay - dir dir woo of all the winds (north east south west)
ping woo = any of the suits in consecutive order (1,2,3) with no pongs
yut toy fah = if you have all the flowers in your hand
moon cheen ching = the payment method in which the person who threw out the winning card (choot choong) pays for all, so the other people won't be mad. ..that's how we play it.
My hands are itchy now...better call up some mahjong players..heehee

not exactly. for having no flowers, that's an extra fahn. so everybody would be paying $16 and the person who threw out the tile would pay $32. i've never played moon cheen ching, so you got me there.
of course, this is HK/Cantonese rules. Taiwanese rules are completely different. no idea how to play that.

isn't moon cheen ching when you don't seurng or pong at all? that's why it's moon (what's in front of you) is ching (clear).

I remember doing that with the family and friends until the wee hours of the morning.
My friend's pop, who has since passed, would interact very little with his family but only to bitch about dinner not being ready, come home from work late, but play MJ with my friends and his kids all night.
He'd still bitch, though, about his kids' slow play. And his kids would say how much of a "fuck" he was. I guess their pop didn't understand English or didn't care.
I learned to play with flowers, and without. I liked playing without.
Now, there's a game they should feature on ESPN!
