The mochitsuki is the one and only fundraiser we sponsor for our ski trip in the winter. Jr. YBA members, their families and members of the Buddhist temple come out for a few hours in the day to fold mochi into small flattened out balls.
YBA stands for Young Buddhists Association. It's the equivalent to youth group at a christian church.
In case you're unfamiliar with mochi, it's sticky rice made into balls. The texture is very smooth. When it's fresh, it feels almost like bread dough. Most people eat it with soy sauce, a soy sauce-sugar mix, or with kinako, a brown powdery sugar. It's Japanese tradition to eat it during the new years.
Last year we took close to 700 pounds in pre-orders and overall sold 1250 pounds of mochi. This year, however, we've so far only collected close to 350 pounds in pre-orders, so we're may end up making too much, or stuck with lots and lots of leftovers. Soo to help the cause, I thought I'd try to sell some online.
If you'd like to order some, it's $3.50 per pound plus shipping, however much that is, unless you want to come pick it up at the Buddhist Temple on the day of the Mochitsuki. I know it may be a long shot that someone may order any, but I thought I'd give it a try for the sake of trying.
