I watched the DDK interview. They talked about the images of Asians on the tube. Interesting stuff. They talked about the stars that Kim idolized, none Asian. :frown:

Of course, when Kwon asked if Kim if there'd come a day when there'd be that breakout sexy, star, I'm wondering if Kim was thinking, "WTF? What about me?"

I guess I shouldn't complain, but is Kwon the first to do segments like this for a major channel? And if so, wasn't anyone else worthy up til now?

Blame it on Asia. In most Asian countries they worship mixed/white images on TV, billboards, newspapers etc.

Even China wants only "beautiful" women working the Beijing Olympics, why the fuck are they "kowtowing" to the western world. Weird shit, I wonder if in Asia they whitewash everything, how can Asians can get a fair shake in the US.

that's nothing new in China. only "beautiful" women get to work in any job where they have to talk to customers at all, regardless of whether the customers are Chinese or foreign. and have you ever rode on an Asian airline and checked out the stewardesses, and then compare them to what you see on domestic flights in the US?

Uh, have you spent extensive time/lived in Asia? There are White models advertising Western brand names for sure and some there is a 崇洋 attitude some people have in lower classes looking for a greener grass on the other side, but the majority of ads feature ridiculously good looking Asian models here and I rarely seen any mixed person in any ad in Taiwan- I know the case is different in HK with mixed models due to historical and demographic circumstances- but honestly most HK-ers worship their wonderful island city-state-ish-like place more than anything on god's green earth. Most Asian countries have models that reflect their demographics and ads as such unless advertising foreign products.

And honestly speaking, most Asian countries and the minds of people are deeply deeply rooted to the indigenous culture and seeing Western goods sold is more indicative of curiousity and expensive tastes (which includes high-end non Western products).

I'm not saying such an attitude doesn't exist, but it doesn't exist anywhere to the extent most foreigners would like to believe which is the reason I'm typing out this long response for blanket statements.

And please, America is one of the most image-conscious nations in the world. Plus in any high-end venue, bars, restaurants, high class shopping malls, you will rarely see unattractive people working there, even people who are overweight or might not be the best looking will be all dolled up.

China is also a unique case of a country trying to come out into the world, and while I don't agree with everything they do in terms of image consciousness, they've have said fuck you to many times to Western intrusion and policy intervention. The Olympics their of way of saying, "We are a/going to be a great nation" and showing it whatever way possible.

Well said. In addition i'd say that the whole "asia mimicking the west" thing is played up a lot by white people. They want to feel worshipped like gods and loved by non white people. It's a deep form of social narcissism. It's definitely colonial in attitude and we've seen it before in the past where the UK would try to remake everything in the Queen's image.

What the western world fails to understand is that there is more pan-asian influence these days than anything else. For example in Thailand the most popular shows and pop stars are actually Korean (Rain, Full House), Taiwanese (Jay Chou, Wan Lee Hom), and Japanese (Ayumi, and a lot of anime). A lot of the heavy industry, household products, and clothing are heavily influenced from other asian countries as well. Aside from the mega million blockbusters most Thais have a fairly apathetic taste for the Hollywood movie industry. I see them watch much just as much or more asian films or stuff that their domestic film industry produces.

I think these are the changes that white westerners don't want to think about. A world that is going in its own direction and generating its own influences even if it is just pop culture.
