Not bad, not bad.
Of course, it doesn't help those of us with a receding hairline or thinning temples except for the shaved look.
I will say I've never seen something put together on a non-ethnic site like this before. Its a decent start.
messy faux hawk looks exactly like my friend. same hair, same last name too. i miss that guy....dude can drink.
bald is missing one thing: can be an effin' A sometimes.

Oh dear. What happened to him?
Good find.
Men's Health has featured an AM model for its pull-out section on exercises a couple of time (used the same model twice).
Otoh, men's magazines such as GQ, Esquire, Details, Vogue Men, Maxim, etc. rarely have any Asian (particularly Asian-American) faces in their pages.

The comments are awesome.
Apparently, some people are pissed off that there is an article focusing only on Asian men.
To the people who are asking "what about other nationalities" and "whatever happened to the melting pot" - gee, how come I don't see you ask these questions when you see white people overrepresented in basically all forms of American media?

I disagree that asian men's hair is as versatile as the article claims. Whenever I tried to grow my hair out, it just grows out straight in what I call the Asian fro look. My hair won't fall down, otherwise I'd get the razor shag look which I kinda dig.

yeah if i grow out my hair, it'll stand straight up until it's about 3 or 4 inches long.

And, you always go thorugh that ridiculously akward phase where you have to cut it before the hair goes up even further.
I'm curious how those guys were able to get their hair to fall down like that. Did they need to get some special treatment for their hair?

the only one from that article with hair that defied the Asian fro was really Daniel Dae Kim. with the exception of Mark Dacascos, all the other cuts had long enough hair that it wouldn't stand up straight anymore. maybe Daniel Dae Kim doesn't get Asian fro, or maybe he just put on a lot of gel and hairspray.

But, I mean, to get the hair that long you need to go through this incredibly ugly transition phase where you get the asian fro going on. I try to grow my hair out, but it gets so ugly that I always end up cutting my hair.

you just have to stick with it i guess. i did that once when i wanted to go from spikes back to hair parted in the middle.
isn't this why you guys wear hats?
when girls grow their hair out, we tie it up, use barrettes to clip the bangs back, wear headbands, etc.
ugh, gotta cut my hair.

What does the Asian fro look like exactly? I think I can picture it but I'm not sure if it's correct.
As for me, my hair is naturally curly to the point that it's kinda hard to find a style that matches. I've tried to use chemicals to make my hair straight but it only works for one day.
So many Asians are dying to make their hair curly when I'm trying to do the exact opposite.
Akane, I've been told by many friends that if I ever wear a hat again, they'll beat me. This relates back to my wardrobe thread in that it makes me look far too young than I actually am. There's a problem when I'm close to 30 and I get asked for ID in a theatre.
well ok, if it makes you look like a little boy, then no.
i just didn't think growing out your hair would matter so much to guys. *shrugs*
i used to have a friend who had his asian fro immortalized in a yearbook picture. his hair is naturally straight but for some weird reason he got it PERMED. we secretly called him chia pet. HAHAHA

girls "growing their hair out" is quite different from boys "growing their hair out". when girls say they're growing their hair out, that means growing it from shoulder or neck length down to their backs. when boys say they're growing their hair out, it means letting it grow out from having a crew cut or from having pretty much no hair.
yeah...i totally forgot about that. we make fun of our dad when his hair is long because he can tuck it behind his ear. that's when he knows it's time for a cut.
before the bf shaved his head, he used to get it cut every 6-8 weeks, i think. then he started balding so he just went mr. clean.

My hair grows so fast that I have to get it cut every 2 weeks. I should seriously grow it long and sell them to wig makers.
And why are more and more Asian guys getting their heads shaved? Looks odd.
it only looks good on certain people. i'm glad it looks good on my bf cuz i will be looking at his chrome dome for a long time.

I don't think I get the fro. Not like Tao.
DDK has sort of wavy, curly hair. It isn't straight.

Think of a brillo brush. Now, picture a black brillo brush.
The hair on the side continues to grow to the side and the hair on top continues to grow upward, all without being affected by gravity.

The thickness and texture make it hard to control at midlength. Most Asian guys need to either keep it groomed often at a shorter conservative length or grow it out longer layers. Add fast hair growth to it and it makes it therefore easier to keep shorn.
I shave my son's head about every two weeks. It otherwise poings out in all directions. That 37% Caucasian seems to give an extra zing of crazy swirl. He's either going to have awesome pop star hair that waves slightly with a good cut or have to completely hack it off every other week when he's older.
My husband... well, I've just given up. He's had the same Conservative Taiwanese Engineer/Prof haircut for over a decade. The one time we tried something different in a Taipei salon he just looked like an uncomfortable Conservative Taiwanese Engineer/Prof in a modern 'do.

i'm actually wondering why more guys of all races don't do it more. i'm not shaved, but i get my hair buzzed once every month (number 2 on the top, and number 1 on the side). it's extremely easy to wash and dries in a few minutes. i don't have to spend time to style it either.

his is the only hair that's not hot to me. it actually looks like a.....helmet. a shiny, greasy helmet. for some reason i'm reminded of my freshman year PE teacher, mr. torian. he had jheri curls and in swim class one day, while we were all in the pool, he dipped his head into the water. yes, that was fun.

i've heard and have known people who shave their kids' heads regularly, girls and boys, because they believe the hair will grow in longer and thicker.
The bald guy looks somewhat like Aaron Kwok at a certain angle...
There are several asian Hair magazines but they are only available as hardcopies through subscription.
Here's a few websites that show some asian hairstyles.. Most free websites feature crappy photos though....
www.rasysa.com/pkg/style/ (some asian women hairstyles)
www.rasysa.com/pkg/style/mens/index.phtml (some asian men hairstyles)
www.modshair.co.jp/hairstyle/index.html (some hair salon)
www.style-hair-magazine.com (not asian, don't like the background music)
www.menshairstyles.net/ (not really asian, some photos are really outdated)

(http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1tMJ3pmz7QU)interesting. i've always kinda wondered how ppl got that disheveled look b/c i've tried it once or twice before and it never looked right. didn't realize i needed to use wax or glue and twist the hair ends. that seems like a lot of work.
but anyways, my hair is too short to do that or any of the other styles featured except ddk's and i can't replicated curly hair w/o a perm or something.
is short asian hair not considered stylish anymore b/c it's seen so often?

for those guys who tried to grow their hair out, u just got to stick it out through the phase. 3 to 4 inches is not very long, and u can just stick it down by putting stuff in your hair. once my hair got longer, it just became wavy. i cut to shorter hair in december, but i was so busy i didnt get a chance for a haircut for 4 months, so it became long in that time. so once u had long hair before, there's no such thing as a transition phase. asian hair is awesome - can do anything/looks good, for both guys and girls

You still lost me with this talk of layers.
Some guys go into a barber shop and start spouting specific instructions. I'm more of one of those guys who just tells the barber to cut it short.
For good hc, go to a place that:
1. uses scissors and not clippers,
2. cuts hair dry or slightly damp rather than wet/washed
May have to pay more, but it's worth it.

Fro or taking on a perm?
I'm still trying to figure out what is meant by "...assimilating to other ethnic hairstyles."
Unless that means corn rows. But I don't Asian dudes do that because they don't like their Asian hair.
Blonding seems more like an assimilation thing.
I can remember when parting it in the middle and feathering was the thing.
I took my hair however it would land in the morning, so long as it didn't look like snowy ground cover.

Go crazy. Get all Michael Bolton with that shit. Send me a picture and I can fill in the sides of your hair with black magic marker. Although you may also end up with a bitchin' eyepatch, some freckles and a thought bubble regarding akane and her unmentionables.

for you guys complaining about hair sticking straight up at around 3-4 inches, you gotta use wax or grease to keep it down. gel ain't gonna work.
banana: don't know why, but i've had a shaved head off and on for the past 10+ years. i don't think i look odd with it - or do i ??
my favorite haircut is the high fade 1 on top and zero on the sides. gotta get that cut every 8-10 days to keep it looking sharp though so i stay away from that. i've been keeping my hair at a 1 or 0 and lining up the top, sides, and back with a straight edge razor. although i did grow it out a bit, low fade zero on the sides and 3 on top.

How so?
I went to a place that did that, but I don't know if it was worth it. Its name included the words 'men styling' so I figured it was worth a shot even though it was more expensive but I can't say I really noticed a difference from the cheaper barber places. Seems like my hair wasn't long enough for that shag hair cut I wanted, and I still needed to grow it out for several more months.
