Just when Duke was trying to recover from the Lacrosse rape scandal, 34, count 34 MBA students were found guilty of cheating. Nine of the students face expulsion, 15 are suspended for one year, and the rest will receive failing grades on the course.

and to make matters worse, most of these were reportedely Asian international students (from Taiwan, Korea, etc.).

In light of all the accomplishments and the model minority stereotypes that Asians are associated with, this year, 2007, has been a scandalous year for Asians and Asian Americans. To recap:

Joseph Cho, a UPenn law student, was charged with several felony counts after trying to shoot two Indian students.

Kenneth Eng was fired from AsiaWeek after his racist rants. He also takes credit for "inspiring" Seung-hui Cho to go on his shooting spree.

Seung Hui Cho, we all know what he did.

Anand Jon, celebrity fashion designer, faces several charges of sexual assault.

Allen Lee was arrested and charged with disorderly conduct (in addition to being discharged from the Marines) after writing about his school shooting fantasies.

Three Asian American students at the University of Virginia were charged with brandishing firearms (though it was only a BB gun).

Zao Xing Yang, a USC student has been charged with making criminal threats and assault at a party.

Granted, a lot of what these people did (like Allen Lee and the UVa students) was simply poor judgment and do not deserve to be branded as criminals, but 2007 is turning out to be a pretty disappointing year for Asian American representation. Just when people like Yul Kwon helped to show that Asians can be both nerdy and hunky (the Asian McDreamy), people like Kenneth Eng had to screw things up.

Standards for cheating and plagiarism are sometimes different overseas, so the foreign students sometimes have a tougher time adjusting or figuring out what is acceptable and what isn't.

I bet most of you haven't taken super hardcore engineering programs in college, in UCSC for me it was given that even the best students I knew had to cheat in some classes (unreasonable projects issued by ignorant professors) in order to even shoulder half the insane amount of workload you had accomplish within such a short period of time.

Honestly though, aside from Cho and Yul, all those other guys are not exactly famous on a national level. I seriously doubt your average American would even know, or care that bunch of Duke international MBM students cheated on their exams. Or some fashion designer dude was charges with sexually assault.

I don't know if most people are even going to know those cheaters were asian. I didn't know until now, even though I already heard about it. Instead, the focus seemed to be on the fact that they were Duke students, and not so much they were asian. Frankly, I wasn't surprised that a bunch of business students cheated. Its like finding out that the ocean has a lot of water.

Cheating in an MBA program? Seriously? They didn't know how to find net present value by looking at a table and multiplying?

people go to b-school to schmooze and make connections, not get the highest grades

I'm not too surprised that they are trying to play the race card now.

This is just like when a bunch of black people get busted for dealing drugs, the dealers claim that the cops are harassing them b/c they're black--nevermind the fact that they did something criminal.

One of the best cases of that ever was an episode of "Cops" I think when they stopped some guy in an airport to search his stuff and he got all upset and was complaining about racial harassment because he was Hispanic. He was saying stuff like - "If I was a blond White guy you wouldn't have stopped me". and on and on.

They open up his stuff and he has a ton of cocaine in packets in there.

They had him face down, handcuffed and he was still bitchin and moanin.

Hhahahaaa, classic.
