Hi Janet! Long time no see. Miami, huh?

Howdy. So did you already know Espanol before moving? Have you picked up any Creole?
What drew you to the particular program you're in? Is Miami an interesting place to work in?
(I'm just curious. While I have all these questions, I must confess that I've never been that interested in visiting Miami, although I used to have relatives that lived in the area and went to school, there.)

Hi Janet! Long time no see. Miami, huh?
It was quite a random choice. Glad I moved though. Being in STL all of my life was oppressing me. =)

I like your inquisitiveness. Let's break it down. I didn't know Espanol at all before coming down here, but I highly recommend learning just the basics because some parts of town will only speak Espanol. I worked in an area just for one day in an area where every other call I get is someone who only wants to speak to someone in Spanish. I've learned some handy phrases. On the flipside, I get to learn the language firsthand while I'm down here. A lot of my coworkers are teaching me a few interesting phrases like "Go kill yourself." LOL.
Coming from St.Louis, there is a tremendous amount of diversity here-- a lot of people from Jamaica, Trinidad, Haiti, Venezuela, Puerto Rico, Nicaragua,... most people i work with weren't from Miami. There are a lot of Jewish people here on Miami Beach, and tons of Europeans. Like St. Louis, there aren't a lot of Asians at all. In fact, I think there's less of them here than in St. Louis. There are a few rude Spanish speaking people who will sneer at you for not knowing their language, but I don't give a crap. They were ignorant to begin with anyway.
I'm neither at FIU or at "the U". I'm in a smaller school called Barry studying for an MBA there. It's an AACSB-accredited school, and I like the culture here. It's not as super expensive/overpriced as the "U" and FIU's program wasn't accredited until I got here I think. Plus, i got a scholarship to study here...not full tuition but every little bit helps.
I like working in Miami. It's more laid back than St. Louis. My company's headquarters in St. Louis transferred me down here so I can study and go to school.

I didn't pick up Creole, but learning french for 6 years helped. I spoke to some folks at a laundromat who were Haitian. Their french isn't the same sound I'm used to hearing, but I was able to communicate to them anyway. I had to ask them about the amount coins I needed to put into a dryer because the amounts on the machines were scratched up. The woman there helped me out. Nice to know i could use a little bit of french here and there. There are french-speaking people I come across at work too who regularly speak french to each other. My ears always "prop" up because I always want to figure out what they are saying. nosey me. hehe

So you spent your whole life in STL and now you're in S. Florida? It must have been quiete a culture shock with the variety of cultures down in S. Florida compared to STL. I was originally from STL until I relocated to California for school and now my employer and business is keeping me here. Do you ever plan on moving back after you're done with school or do you plan to stay down there? Do the CSIs down there really wear dressy clothes and drive Hummer H2s?

Hahahh.... er... there there. =) Seriously, now imagine how I feel if you add 26 more years toward that one year you've been in STL. =) I must admit that I felt pretty oppressed. LOL. Actually, now that I've been in Miami for almost 11 months, I'm actually getting bored again. I need to drive up more North toward Boca or travel to Sanibel Island sometime. I'm not bored of the beach yet. =)

Dude, I need more Miami friends who are Asian. Kinda tired of hearing Spanish and Creole, ya know? It's quite pervasive obviously because it comes with the territory. =) What brings you and your gf to this town?

I wasn't that shocked to be honest, but it is indeed different here. Definitely more road rage, honking, and finger flicking from the 11 months here than I've seen in 3 years back in St. Louis. I get all the diversity I want down here....quite satiated right about now, but I think it's wonderful to work with people from so many different backgrounds. Where in STL did you live? That's great that you're working in Cali. Where in Cali are you now? Trust me, CSI people are very Hollywoodized compared to what I see here. The local news here sucks but I have to say it's more liberal and laid back than the news back in STL. =)

South Beach is awesome but it is also quite overrated. The tourism industry would hate me. =)

you know, miami was recently voted the city with the worst drivers.

in big cities you HAVE to be an asshole driver.
driving in st. louis is a breeze compared to chicago. one thing i really hate about st. louis is the shitty public transportation. i look at the metrolink and all i can think of is the simpsons episode about the monorail.

I'm living like a true college student here too. You're not alone. =) How are the student loans racking up? hehe... Jackson Memorial Hospital... is that near Coral Gables? I don't have that great of a sense of direction although I know everything is in a grid system. I just know how to find my way around if I'm anywhere on Miami Beach (North or South), and as long as I'm near Highway 95, I am fine. =) That's another thing that's different between STL and Miami. Miami avenues and streets for the most part function on an x and y axis. The horizontal lines are Avenues and the vertical lines are numbered streets. Miami Avenue is pretty much the 0 horizontal coordinate, and the 0- vertical coordinate is highway 95 I think. Correct me if I'm wrong. The vertical lines are usually some other name...like Winn Dixie Hwy.... I got lost in Hialeah once, which for the most part, doesn't have that great of a reputation. It's not that bad to me, which is good and bad at the same time. =) I didn't think it was awful driving around here but it definitely looks like a rough area to live in. How's residency? Do you have to do any Grand Rounds? I only know that because I have doctor friends myself who have to do that. What Chinese restaurant was most decent to you? I haven't found one yet. I think it's weird how pervasive Thai-Japanese restaurants around here. Sometimes I go on 163rd for chinese grocery shopping. I think there are less Chinese people here than in STL. In Coconut Grove, I passed by a Jamaican-Chinese restaurant once. That was interestin. =)

it's voted the worst probably because everyone's too polite. =) People don't drive up into the middle of the intersection before they turn left in STL. In Miami, you'll get honked if you don't do that simply because everyone here doesn't want you to get in the way of their momentum. =)

I lived in Wentzville and still have a lot of extended family there so I visit frequently. Now I'm in N. Cal. at the capitol living in an area called Greenhaven-Pocket. There's so many retired Asians living in my area so the common nickname is "Yellowhaven." It’s going to be a long time before I even think about moving out of this state, love the weather, variety of food, and the increasing amount of foreclosed homes which is great for my business. Speaking of homes, my relatives all supposedly have "custom" built homes in STL and are always boasting that you get so much more for your money there than in Cal. and that I should move back there because of that. I'm a senior project manager for a home builder and we specialize in building multi-million $ spec homes. I also run my own business on the side which deals with remodeling and restoring high end condos and earlier period homes. So when I see my relatives' homes, I can see why they only paid a fraction of what a comparatively sized home we build runs for. The land may be cheaper in STL but the quality and type of materials used in these so-called custom homes really are cheap Home Depot/Lowe’s shelf stock so I can see why the home prices are so low. I could easily go around and point out all the construction flaws and cheap building materials to my relatives when I visit but then I would have no food to eat and no place to stay.:frown:
