i can't seem to put my work down at night. i keep leaving work at like 8 or 9 o'clock at night when most people leave around 6. aiya... i have to learn to put it all down... even when i'm driving home, i'm thinking about work...

Your work has taken over your life SWK! But hey, at least you have a choice. In HK, I'm only supposed to work until 6pm, but everyone stays until 9 or 10. The peer pressure is enormous. I feel like a jerk if I leave ON TIME...And we work on Saturdays. I miss you New York!

Do you like your work?

i'm not so sure i like it. but for some reason i'm a little obsessive over it.

you work on saturdays? so you don't work for a multinational? i thought none of the multinationals worked on saturdays. too bad you missed the internet boom in HK! it was fun. i was there for part of it. :) but now it's all gone... :(

Oh no, I work for an multi/international but they've gotten devious. They send HK people to run the place like an HK business. Makes sense since we're in HK I guess.

Hehe, I'm actually posting from work. Luckily I missed the boom and apparently so did my company. No one ever notices me doing this.

yeah it's crazy. so many expats and OCs i know have left HK because the economy is so bad over there right now.

and blech! nothing against local HKers, but businesses ran by locals are so... blech!

Yeah, people are getting paid less than $1000 USD a month. Some people I know are getting abotu $4500 HKD a month, which seriously sucks yeah?

Luckily I'm on a contract job and can go home soon. What do you do?

i'm a programmer.
i was working at a startup. the money was invested by this guy whose father is a shipping tycoon. basically a rich kid with plenty of money to throw around. he invested in several startups.
yeah i miss those days sooooo much. my company had people from the states, UK, israel, india, singapore, and of course locals. it was a very international crowd.
but yeah i would be making about half of what i make over here if i stayed in HK. and with the rent that i would have to pay, i don't think i'll ever get anywhere in HK. the economy is just not doing well. i was watching the news one time, and they were saying that PCCW was laying off however many hundred people, and the next item in the news was that Shanghai is hiring like 8000 people or something. crazy.

Wow, Hong Kong sounds really bad.

Isyen, SWK, don't overwork yourselves. Life's too short, you might end up hating your job.

Oh too late. I'm already at that stage now. Just waiting to move on. HK doesn't pay overtime either, SWK. Did they ever?

Yeah everyone is moving to China so the economy has gone downhill. So many businesses are over there that I have to go to Shenzhen at least once a week.

ooh shenzhen. :) cheap foot massages. hahhah! that shit is gooood.

they didn't pay their people like local firms did. they were really modelling after the startups in silicon valley. we weren't paid hourly. but we got bonuses for getting stuff done and done well. :)

actually come to think of it, nobody in HK really is paid hourly. not sure how all that works though. never worked at a local firm before.

by the way, are you having to use a visa to go to shenzhen? i got my wui heung jing (i don't know what the english term for it is) so all i have to do at customs is show them the card and my ID card. :D

iris

Yeah you HKer :P it's a 10 year wait for an I.D. card so I gotz to get a multiple visa instead. They don't give wui heung jings to foreigners. Love all the fake designer stuff in Shenzhen. Nasty ass food though. People tried to get me to eat baked centipedes in eggs. :gross:

No more bonuses in HK anymore. Ah well, I'm not even here that long. Went up to The Peak yesterday and rode the Star Ferry. Sometimes I love this city. :) The food...good gosh...I'm drooling. *wipes chin delicately*

i thought it was continuous work for 7 years straight to get permanent residency? but yeah i got three stars on my card. so they gave me a wui heung jing. the funny thing is that i really got it so i can take my grandparents to go visit the village that my grandfather grew up in. but when i actually got the card, my grandfather was saying that he doesn't want to go because everybody left already. <_< hahah so i just used it to go to shenzhen and zhongshan.

the expats that move to HK for a real lengthy period of time will eventually come to the 6-month test. :) that is, at 6 months, they will start getting a little homesick, finding things here and there about HK that just annoys the shit out of them. then after this period, they'll either completely fall in love with the city or they'll hate it.

anyway, i hope you're trying alot of local restaurants before you have to leave HK. hahahh this is exactly what i posted to Alibaba on another post. :P and if you have the money, go to soho and eat there alot! it's expensive but hey when will you go back to HK again?

Yeah leaving for the land of the Aussies for another consultanting job on Dec. 10th yay! Which MTR stop is SoHo in?

Used to hate Hong Kong when I first came because it was so different, but now I'm liking it alot. So many different fun places. And once again...the food...

where in aussieland are you going? you're going to be just in time to escape the cold weather in the northern hemisphere. :)

soho is right next to LKF. walk in the direction of sheung wan from LKF and you'll hit it. it's the area where the outdoor esculator is. that's where the most expensive restaurants in HK are located. and it's also an area where alot of HK movies film at. so at the MTR exit you'd usually take to go to LKF, right before you cross Queen's Road to go to LKF, take a right instead and keep walking and you'll see the outdoor esculator. just take the esculator and when you start seeing restaurants and gwailos, that's where soho is.

i'd also want to recommend another place to eat. the best indian food in HK. ChungKing Mansions. alot of locals stay away from that place like it's radioactive though because they think it's dangerous. but it's really not that bad. walk straight in until you're at the last set of elevators. go to 3rd floor and there's an indian restaurant right there. price is great too.

I'll be going to Sydney. I was just bitchin about the cold weather here in HK on another thread :P so I'm looking forward to some beaches and surfing. Yay! Oh yeah, hella weird how it's summer there from Nov-Feb. I just can't comprehend it.

I went to Taj Mahal Restaurant in TST and I was mobbed (copy watch! copy watch!) while I was there. So scary. Haha, the Indian food places here are so shady. Just getting there is an adventure in sanitation. All are located in the upper floors of really sketchy buildings. I'm afraid of getting tetnus [sp?] on my way to the restaurant. But the food is so good.

ah! so you've been to chungking mansions! yeah so you understand why the locals avoid that place at all costs.

but yeah, a plate of indian food in central can buy you an entire meal in chungking mansions. :)

another place you should go is sai kung for seafood. take the MTR to choi hung then take a mini-bus (they have mini-buses that goes directly to sai kung). the mini-bus trip is long though. but the seafood is well worth it! actually you can try the same quality of seafood on lamma island.

Way ahead of you SWK. Did that two nights ago. Got to pick out my own seafood swimming in little tanks. I was kinda grossed out though. I like my food very dead and well beaten.

Dude, I have given up doing work. Now I'm just posting and perusing YW until I can leave. If you could be so kind as to buy me a bottle of motivation and send it over...

D.C. huh? Never been, but might be going in the near future. Still choosing law schools. I'm leaning towards NYU, but I'm still waiting on Georgetown and others. Come on scholarships...come to me.... (that's my dance to the money gods)

Yeah you definitely can't do the whole drunk and alone thing in HK at night. Subways stop running so early and it's just a tiny bit dangerous here at night.

you're supposed to push the little red button when you're approaching your stop! but yeah you'll have to be visually familiar with the area that your stop is at to know that you're there.

how about those TV sets on the buses?! hahhah HKers are so addicted to television.

Yeah, when I first got on a bus and saw the tv, I was like "oh swanky." And sometimes, they play English programs like National Geographic.

What red buttons?

You know, I looove the MTR. It's so clean, not like NYC cuz they won't let you eat or drink in the terminal. It doesn't smell like a bathroom :gross: all the time. And the Octopus?? Hellz yeah!

yeah octopus card is da shit! buses take them, alot of minibuses take them now, and of course MTR. i think at the universities, some of the soda machines take them. 7-11 takes them! KRC takes them. so convenient.

but what i hate is these women who are too lazy to take their cards out of their purses and they're trying to scan their entire purse but the scanner just can't seem to find it sometimes. hahah then i'm waiting in line thinking, "take the damn card out damnit!"

iris
11-29-2002, 03:58 AM
heh, all mini-buses take them now! Sweet, yeah? Cafe de Coral and Mickey D's allows them too. :P

Those freakin women annoy me. Why don't they understand they have to put it in on the outside pocket of their purse and not the wallet inside the inner pocket of the purse?!

Man, I had the best xiao long baos at Hung Hom [sp?] two nights ago. Was in that restaurant in front of the giant building shaped like a ship. I've got to go back. It's a new addiction. Wow, I have an easily addictive personality. Gotta watch that.

SWK: KCR Corporation bought a bunch of new Korean manufactured trains that have TV monitors installed in every car. But right now they don't show anything interesting, just ads and "The next station is ..."

the main canteen on our school campus takes Octopus now. as does Maxim's. but yeah. mtr is expensive. gotta pay for cleanliness and bright flourescent nice lighting. stick to minibuses or buses. (not as expensive as Tokyo though ... a four day trip to Japan, not planning on travelling to any other cities, and still transportation ends up as like a quarter of my budget for the trip. not counting the plane tickets.)
