View Full Version : The hapa meal

Are any of you out there ever have strange food combinations that result from your multi-ethnicness?

I have been known to eat kimchi with practically anything, including pizza, hot dogs, and hamburgers.

Eating a bowl of rice with caeser salad and washing it down with a tall glass of milk.

Eating spaghetti with chopsticks...

Thanksgiving with turkey and plenty of panchan (korean side dishes that you usually get for free when you go to restaurants.)

oh yeah. and it's not just me-- sometimes i'll make dinners for the whole family that are something like this:

miso soup; several kinds of sushi, some with traditional things (ie fish, cucumber) and others with stuff like soy hot dog pieces and mayonnaise; for dessert, red bean buns and ice cream.

(and by the way, soy hot dogs or mayonnaise sushi was *not* my idea; that was my brother. it was actually not half bad, tho  )

holiday meals usually end up being something mixed like this too, with asian food and "american" food side by side, even in the same dish at times.

i don't know why we do things this way sometimes. maybe its cos my whole family is hapa (ie both my parents are 1/2, so obviously my siblings and i are too), hehe

Nah, more like popo's and grits. Not sushi and grits. Cause I wouldn't eat sushi for breakfast.

That is one thing I don't do, eat spaghetti w/ chopsticks. I cook with chopsticks, eat char siu bao w/ chopsticks as well as practically any other meal w/ chopsticks including cake (if I have to) but never with spaghetti. Not sure why either. ;)

When we gather in Seattle, the usual holiday meal is half and half Japanese and American for my family. My grandmother and I make sushi and miso for about 35 ppl and we have some American food prepared buffet style. These days I spend them more with my husbands' family and we eat Chinese food almost exclusively. A couple years ago they and a few family friends asked me to cook a traditional Thanksgiving dinner because they had never had one before. Guess it was exotic and new for them.

So, a 'normal' meal for me is mixing Asian and American food. But I'm pretty flexible. I'll eat nearly anything.

Revives old topic!

McDonalds Japan has introduced the Kalbi Namul burger and McDonalds Korea is releasing the Teriaki Burger.

Why?

Cuz Koreans would be insulted if McDonalds were to mock their food like that, and Japanese don't know any better. And you gotta just try to increase the profits in Korea somehow, why not move something that has been selling like crazy in Japan over there?

I think the Thai people and government sued Mickey D's ass for taking the som tum and franchising it as a "shaker salad" (something about having legal rights to the name 'som tum') . . . .

then they came out with a terriyaki type thing sandwiched between two portions of sticky rice . . .

funky tasting to say the least.

I like my tom yum shrimp with spaghetti noodles sometimes, and "jackie-fusion food" is . . . sometimes safe to eat.

when i use to be vegetarian i had this great idea.

i'd get a veggie burger that was bought at the chinese vegetarian store, cook with thick soy sauce, get a slice cheese, mayo, fried egg cooked in maggie sauce, and some lettuce greens and stick all that between two toasted blueberry waffles. yum!! :D

does that count??

No way, no one can eat a whole jar of kimchi in 2 minutes.

Besides, having a kimchi eating contest would only make activists claim the show is racist for giving the perception that kimchi tastes bad and that it is an exotic an nasty foreign food.

Also any Korean contestant would pass that with ease.

Man, I cannot see how kimchi can go with pasta that has italian sauce. I can see it with naeng-myun or udong, but never with something that has tomato sauce.

Anyways, Colombian food is mostly meat, sweet plantain, beans, rice, guacamole, and rice, with a side dish of soup that usually has chicken paste. I can't see how kimchi can mix with that either.

they have kim chi pizza.

never tried it. so can't say.

i sometimes eat pao tsai (chinese version of kim chi but sour and spicy and not as red) and kim chi together as side dishes.

eating too much kim chi gives me sol sa hahahaha. i can't stomach spicy food. i can tolerate it taste and spiciness wise. but, it upsets my stomach lining. i have a sensitive tummy.

Hmm.. I feel tame compared to most of you. The main thing I do is use sesame or chili oil to cook things that is usually cooked in other oils. Or have gailan as a side dish. Of course, I'm also from Minnesota so using any form of hot spice (peppers and the like) and making rice not from a box makes me seem "ethnic."

Ehh... it really isn't that bad since Minnesotans tend to be liberal and nice (although, the niceness can be superficial). The problem is that it's been white-washed for so long. Now, we have the second highest Hmong population in the US. Plus there seems to be plenty of Chinese and Vietnamese here. I think it has to do more with that minorities have been pretty silent and sparse until the last few decades. We're starting to have a rather large Mexican population so I think that that will, in the end, make it more apparent that Minnesota is in fact a racially diverse state to Minnesotans to thought it wasn't.

Of course, I'm also from Twin Cities and being from a major metropolitan area colors my opinion.

On a side note, because of donations from one of the more wealthy families in Minnesota, the Minneapolis Institute of Arts has a collection of Chinese art that supposedly rivals the Smithsonian.

You know... I was really surprised to learn that the U is only about 14% (or less) non-white. It always seemed like more when I walked around there (or course, my classes kinda followed that percentage).

I think, besides the Major sity, especially if you go to the suburbs you get a lot of flack for not looking Caucasian?

I don't think it's too bad. I grew up in the suburbs and didn't feel like I got too much discrimination. Of course, it might depend on the suburb, being the farther you go from the city (of course, even in the outer ring burbs I don't feel it). The burb I currently work in seems to have a higher asian population so we are inflitrating some of the suburbs.

Two things, in my opinion, asians have working for them (compared to the other minorities) in Minnesota are that Minnesota is quite PC (being an extremely liberal state) which helps cut down outright displays of discrimination and that the stereotype of asians being hardworkers goes well with the Minnesotan hardwork ethic. I've heard much more comments against blacks and latinos than asians.

Eros, i grew up in Bloomington MN and lived there for 18 years, so i know what u mean about the burbs. Asians in the burbs don't get discriminated against cuz they're whitewashed. in my high school of 2000 ppl i was one of 10 asians, 6 of them adopted. i'm glad i'm not in minnesota anymore b/c despite the high hmong population in st paul and the fobs at the U, it's mad white.
