Hello, I am writing to ask for your help as fellow Asian Americans and activists. As you might be aware, there are hundreds of thousands of North Korean refugees, many of them orphan children, who have escaped the famine & oppression of their homeland and into China, where they are forced to live in hiding because they are considered to be illegal aliens to be captured and sent back to North Korea. Their dire situation was recently featured on ABC's Nightline, and you may have also seen various news reports on the subject.

I saw it on ABC Nightline. There were three episodes, but I only saw and recorded two: the ones with the couple, and the street kids. The footage was all taken from a documentary film called "Shadows and Whispers" by Korean-American filmmaker Kim Jung-eun.
I'm trying to work with my local AAJA chapter to possibly send some monetary aid to that church or something, I'm not sure yet. I'll let you know.
With a situation like that, are people sure they really want a unifed Korea?

Maybe in a unified Korea, there wouldn't be famines, although I don't think the South is so democratic that there wouldn't be any political oppression at all.

Oh, it's democratic alright -- democratically corrupt.
First of all, I wanted to say thank you for posting the info about my petition on to this site -- I really appreciate it! For those of you who were concerned about the US citizen thing -- don't worry, it doesn't literally mean "citizen" as in the legal sense, but as in "member of the public" -- so please, I urge everyone to sign even if you're not technically a US citizen! I PROMISE you it won't have ANY ramifications on you whatsoever! Also, even though the Senate did hold its hearing last Friday, it is about to consider legislation on this issue -- so this petition is more important than ever, so please keep passing it along and support it! We have assurances from Washington that every single voice will count when the bill comes up for vote in the next few weeks. The petition is also up at an alternative site: http://www.petitiononline.com/nkrcrp/petition.html
It might be easier to sign it there--and double signatures don't matter, bec. I'll be cleaning it up before submitting it. Again, thank you everyone! God Bless! -Jina Nam
