His stuff is pretty much everywhere, I've seen it in places like Spencers Gifts, Half-Price Books, pretty much everywhere. They have two or three stand alone stores and extensive distribution.

Maybe a few of you will think I'm on crack or just an asshole but I think the first step is educating the would-be consumers on why some of the D&G shirts with Asian 'themes' are racist. The largest stumbling block could be no one cares because they confuse it with the umbrella theme of D&G's wares... stupid, sexual double-entendre that usually juxtaposes mild, refined images with a not so subtle obscene reference.

What Todd has managed to do is tap into the market of using Asian masculinity and femininity and racialize his standard t-shirt formula. I don't like it but I see this as part of the larger problem of the general non-Asian public eating it up. Not to be a defeatest but where is our leverage here? The only response I can come up with personally is a larger, united response. But I think that might start with a few good, to the point, articles to educate and elucidate exactly why these shirts differ from his other shirts in anticipation of the defense that all his shirts are stupid or 'politically incorrect'.

But thankfully I'm holding a mug of hot beverage and can easily and quite willingly slap a quick STFU label on it if I'm way off base. I remember the guy's responses by email and I don't think Spencers is going to do a damned thing except send polite condescending corporate replies about how they're sensitive to the diversity of their customers while putting in a larger order to sell to college kids.

^No, I think you're right. But I don't see what can be said to make buyers of these shirts to stop. Most people can't even make the connection between stereotypes and racism, let alone the implications of the sayings on these shirts.

I think we should just come out with our own racist tshirts. Then when they try to shut us down, we just point the finger at D&G. That's the only way to make people understand and change I think.

I don't even think that shirt needs to be specifically targeted against this guy. This idea is a general defense used by a lot of the white privileged and it really needs to go.

But on this thread, and this subject, I'm throwing my support pointedly to Sizwe's focus on D&G (and Todd) because I know this is far from his first encounter with both. I remember his previous endeavor -- which is what SWK referred to as another thread, and he did a lot of legwork only to pretty much get rude, racist responses.

My first responsibilities are to my family so I'm only here to encourage and make suggestions. Experience with campaigns has taught me that it's more effective if there's one focus with coordinated activity towards that focus. An effective campaign is very illustrative and could serve as an example and learning tool.

Here's the players and their skills.

Sizwe - could manage combined efforts. Has tracked this the longest, knows it best. could coordinate with black lava.

akane - access to production. great professional skills, experience with public, publicity. would see project through completion.

black lava - perfect distribution. most likely could provide a reliable subcontractor to render the 'political cartoon' if you will.

My suggestion on the cartoon was only one suggestion. Advice there is know who it is that you want the message to reach and don't give the target of the message to be any more resistant to it. The overall goal as I understand it is to raise awareness that 1) it is racist 2) why it's racist.

If the message is some sort of vengeance against whites in general and not against racist t-shirts in a focused campaign, or if it at least appears more that way, the original intended message may be lost.
