i don't know why they labeled that graph "getting over the handover". even the article itself attributed the dips to the Asian financial crisis and SARS, and not to the handover itself.

I would also argue that you saw a dip from people leaving HK for other countries like Canada and the United States before the handover, and that helped drive down prices.

actually up until 1997, the economy was doing great. the rich people that were leaving for Canada only did so to get Canadian citizenship and they still did business in HK. plus, a lot of the people that left HK have actually gone back. if people leaving HK caused a slowdown in the economy, we would have been seeing a continual dip from 1984 to 1997.
