It's on like Donkey Kong. Really, it is. They were talking about not having to preorder due to so many being released, but now apparantly they're as scarce as the PS3.

I just can't wait for the new Zelda game. I read that the only way you'll be able to swing your sword is via actual swinging motions with your arms with that one controller. The more gangster you are the easier the bosses go down - I hope ^_^ Sweeeeeeeeet

Kidding about the first-born. Maybe.

Jesus Christ, it's just a name! It's not like the Christian Fundies were all up in arms about Sega naming their 16-bit console the Genesis. And if the Fundamentalists don't get mad about something, that's telling you something. If you feel that your maturity would be in danger if you ever bought the Wii, fine; on release day, print a large sticker that says Nintendo Revolution, and when you get a Wii, put it over the logo.

Gamers never grow up, they just grow old.

Haha, good to know. My fears have been abated!

This is really random, but it's the only place I could put it where people might care: the themes in Red Steel are very disturbing to me.

For those of you not acquainted with the game, it's a first person shooter that appropriates a great deal of Japanese culture. Specifically focusing on (surprise surprise) the Yakuza and various ambiguously interpreted Samurai "honor" themes (including a liberal use of katanas). The story involves an American protagonist who has his Japanese wife kidnapped by the Yakuza because her father was a former boss. Naturally, the American goes to Japan to realize his latent dominance over a culture he previously had no knowledge of, including mastering the katana and forcing the Yakuza to submit (defeated bosses literally bow to you).

I'm hoping that the French developer pointedly calls the protagonist "American" as a reference to the multiple ethnicities that the term encompasses, but even with that assumption (likely unjustified), the plot still reeks of 80's white-guy-dominates-foreign-culture movies.

So far, the game looks like a lot of fun. You use the motion-aware controller to directly approximate a "gun" onscreen, as well as a "sword." It's a game I'd very much like to play, but at the same time, I refuse to support the basic premise of the game.

Edit: Adding insult to injury, the high influence of actual Yakuza members in modern day Japan is a direct result of American influence post-WWII. In order to control Japan as a modern neo-colony, the American military sought out proxies that had already established a degree of regional control after the dissolvement of the Japanese empire - the various Yakuza. This game is perpetuating the myth of white dominance over a stereotypical representation of a society, a stereotype that America literally fostered.

Frankly, I'd rather see SSBB than Red Steel as a launch title...the only games at launch that look interesting to me are Elebits and Trauma Center. Maybe Zelda. But I was never really a fan of Metroid.

The problem with the Wii is that it comes without a a) Blu-ray or b) HD-DVD player. If I'm going to dish out for a console, I don't mind paying more for some two-in-one features that will ultimately mean less hassle for me.

That Wiimote rather turned me off too, seeing how it works.

I now own a Wii. That Mii channel thing is pretty crazy, but fun. Basically creating smaller versions of yourself that you can use as characters in playing some of the games. That Sports game looks goofy as I don't know what, but damn if it ain't fun. It actually got my parents into it, which is what Nintendo has been going for all along. And most females have expressed interest, which is a first as far as a lot of systems go. They may make some bank off this.

Arex
11-21-2006, 07:32 PM
Nintendo made money off the GameCube which was generally viewed as a failure (compared to the PS2, at least). Of course they'll make money off the Wii.

I just saw a tennis game on Wii, and for the first time in the last 10 years, I was really impressed by a Nintendo game. You actually play the game by swinging your controller like you would a real racket, it looked so much fun and I nearly tried to convince myself to by a Wii on the spot.

So I really want one of these and TRU has a bundle online for $540 bucks including 5 games. However, I won't play 3 of those games and I'd rather have extra controllers. I think TRU also has a 15% off coupon for online purchases today. Should I get this? Or should I wait for stores to stock the console alone?

Arex
12-26-2006, 05:00 PM
As long as they aren't gouging you too much on the price, you could always buy the bundle, then try to return the games you don't want unopened somewhere for store credit.

The package TRU was selling includes a "starter kit" which is basically a 512MB SD card. Assuming $50 per game, you're paying $40 for an SD card that should cost less than $5-10. I guess it really depends on how badly you want the system now.

Seeing as I got Zelda for Christmas, I'm really itching to find the damn console somewhere. Sucks.

bluemonq
12-26-2006, 07:16 PM
Just doing the math: even if one were to return the games elsewhere for store credit, let's be generous and say you'll get $40 per game. That's still $420 for the reduced "package", of which $100 will be the remaining two games, leaving $320. Minus the $10 that an SD card is worth, that's $310, or a $60 premium to be able to own a Wii right now. Don't forget taxes...

thaite
12-26-2006, 08:53 PM
you'd be lucky to get 40 bucks a game.

you'd be lucky to get 40 bucks a game. Some stores will only give you the most recent sale price for the item. Since these games are so new, I wouldn't be surprised if you get the full $50 a game. Of course, without a receipt, you'll only get store credit instead of cash back.

FYI

Wii Available for Purchase 12/29: The Nintendo Wii will again be available for purchase on Amazon.com on 12/29, Friday morning, at some point between 7am and 11am PST. We will be limiting purchases to one per household. We anticipate that we will sell through our inventory very quickly as demand for this product continues to be very high. At this time, we do not have any information on future Nintendo Wii offers, but we will post updates on future availability on this page.

Hmmm... This is almost tempting. Some people have had success returning individual bundled items to GameStop stores for refunds by showing their invoice. Alternatively, Best Buy will usually offer store credit although I'm not sure they carry the $60 Wii-branded SD card. There's no getting back the $30 for the service plan, or additional $10 handling fee (which is not included in the price).

Since I already have Zelda, the only items I'd keep are the system, Wiimote and Super Monkey Ball. Need to talk to the wifey about this one since she's the one whose getting it for me for the birthday/Christmas/anniversary...

I went to Target and traded Super Swing Golf for Wario Ware (before seeing Lethal's recommendation--I was a fan of the GBA version of the game). My wife likes Wario Ware, and we figured we already have golf on WiiSports, so that was a wise move.

Elebits, although I haven't opened it, looks like a keeper since it seems to make good use of the Wiimote. I'll probably crack it open when I get home in a little bit if I don't decide to immerse myself into Zelda instead (I'm all of ten minutes into the game so far).

I'm still not sure what I'm going to do with Monkey Ball. I'll probably hold onto it sealed for now since there really aren't any other games out that pique my curiosity.

Unfortunately, my Wii is not online. For some reason I can't connect to the service, the same as I can't with my DS, even when manually configuring the settings. I'm not sure if it's a DSL or router issue but it's annoying as fuck. Nintendo's tech support couldn't even help me. WTF. Anyone else having problems connecting? I'm using Verizon DSL.

The thing about Trauma Center is that it's pretty much a port of the DS version, and a lot of people who have a Wii have a DS. As for SSX Blur, it was fun until I realized that it doesn't matter what Special Trick you do when the meter is full. Got pretty lame after that.

All the research I've read points to no if you're already active. I'd buy something else like a bowflex or a stationary bike. Unless you have ulterior motives like me and just want to see gyrating female booties.

I'm rather see gyrating male other things. No room in my apt for large equipment tho, it's a strictly bachelor/bacherette pad with me and my roommate. We just have a lot of free weights and a set of push-up bars.

My baby mama picked one up today. I gotta milk that shit before she blows up. She also picked up some surgical simulation game for me after she read this research study:

YOU might think it a bad idea for trainee surgeons to play games on the Nintendo Wii when they should be studying, but it might be time well spent.

Kanav Kahol and Marshall Smith of the Banner Good Samaritan Medical Center in Phoenix, Arizona, have found that surgical residents performed better during simulated surgery after playing on the Wii console. They put it down to the console's novel "Wiimote" control system, which allows players to direct on-screen action using a wireless wand that detects acceleration in three dimensions.

Now they are designing Wii software that will accurately simulate surgical procedures. A training platform based on the console, which costs about $250, might be more practical for trainee surgeons in the developing world than traditional virtual training tools, which typically cost a great deal more.

To test how the Wii affected surgical skill, the researchers asked eight trainee doctors to play it for an hour before performing a virtual surgery. They used a training tool called ProMIS, which simulates a patient's body in 3D and tracks the surgeon's movements as they operate. They fed the movements to an algorithm which scores the virtual surgeon on a range of factors. Wii-playing residents scored 48 per cent higher on tool control and performance than those without the Wii warm-up.

The researchers also found that some games - such as Marble Mania, in which the player guides a marble through a 3D obstacle course - are especially good because players must use small, precise movements of the wand. Others were less useful: "You don't gain a lot from swinging an imaginary tennis racket," says Kahol.

James Rosser of Beth Israel Medical Center in New York had previously found that video games can also improve the dexterity crucial to performing minimally invasive surgery (Archives of Surgery, vol 142, p 18).

Kahol and Smith believe that the Wii has the most potential of any console for trainee surgeons. They tracked participants' hand motions while playing Wii and during virtual surgery, using a glove laced with motion sensors, and showed that the motions were very similar. "The whole point about surgery is to execute small, finely controlled movements with your hands, and that is exactly what you get playing Wii," says Kahol.
"The small, finely controlled movements of surgery are what you get playing Wii"

He and Smith will be presenting their results at the Medicine Meets Virtual Reality conference in California later this month.

Any great shooter games to be recommended? You mean first person shooters? Metroid Prime 3 is rated highly, but it's more of a first person 3D exploration/adventure game first, and shooter second. I have it and played through maybe 1/3 of it before I decided I should go back and finish Zelda. Pretty entertaining. REVIEW (http://wii.ign.com/articles/815/815424p1.html)

Then, if you're looking for a game with online multiplayer, there's Medal of Honor Heroes 2. Never played it, but it's supposed to be the best (and only) multiplayer FPS on the Wii. REVIEW (http://wii.ign.com/articles/833/833766p1.html)

You're a lucky guy. I had bunch of preggies on the Wii fit last night. I think it kicked my pregnant and lactating fetish back. I guess it was inevitable since I was on the BBW kick.

Bad news. the host hasn't given me back my Wii fit. I guess I'll play Mario Kart at the mean time. And really, I haven't played video game that much since Halo 2. I played the Wii a lil' bit when I got them then got tired of it. Now with Wii Fit, my enthusiasm for the Wii is rejuvenated. I can't wait for Shaun White Snowboard game.
