Aircraft hits New York building

A small plane has crashed into a building in New York City's Upper East Side, causing a serious fire.

TV pictures show flames and smoke coming out of the high-rise building on Manhattan island.

The FBI has told the BBC that there is no indication that the crash is terrorism-related.

A spokeswoman for the New York Fire Department said the aircraft had struck the 20th floor of a building on East 72nd Street.

Witnesses told the Associated Press news agency the crash caused a loud noise, and burning and falling debris was seen.

It was definitely a plane, according to CNN.

This scared the crap outta me. I'm sitting at work and the room of developers is all quiet and then somebody goes, "A plane just crashed into a building in NY." Ugh.

From the looks of it, it doesn't appear to be terrorist-related. But NORAD is putting up fighter planes anyway over several major cities.

Wonder how much the event (and the assumed Republican response) will have on next month's congressional elections.

Yankees pitcher Cory Lidle was piloting the plane.

I thought we were under attack again. Or maybe Cory Lidle is attacking us.

^Well, he's dead now, so I doubt it. RIP to the man, even though I'm not a fan of their organization.

The entire office seemed to stop a couple minutes as everyone searched all over for news.

Bad memories.

I think this is just a freak accident, not terrorist related, of course that's not what Fox will be saying.

i was watching footage of the wreck on TV, wondering if the structural integrity of the buiding will hold. it looked like it will, because the hole was pretty small compared to the width of the building. but it was just that the collapsing of WTC was so shocking that i couldn't help but wonder. i was watching on TV when WTC collapsed from the attack.

I presume Cory Lidle has good hand-eye coordination, but can he read.

How awful. I wonder if the authorities will be able to find out what happened?
