I know this is an old anime....
I just watched it for the first time, and it took my breath away.
Miyazaki is a genius.

Yeah, the amount of effort put into making that movie is pretty amazing. All hand-drawn and stuff (I think). At the opposite end we have Dragonball which has poorly drawn animations repeated over and over for every imaginable use.
Go watch Grave of the Fireflies, but do it when you're in a good mood.

in defense of dbz, because i use to be a huge fan, it was a t.v. series so the episodes had to be done with a very limited time allowance. whereas princess probably took years to complete.
but both are much better in quality than a lot of the stuff in the states.

That is a very poor comparison mate... As stated, Dragon Ball is a TV series, whilst PM is a full feature length. Go figure out what their budget was. It's like comparing Spongebob Square Pants to Akira mate. Try making a better comparison in the future or you'll have the mickey taken out of you.
Yeh, old film now as the recent Ghibli film out is Howl's Moving Castle. In honesty, Princess Mononoke was great but story wasn't good enough compared to the likes of Totoro of Laputa: Castle in the Sky.
You're right about one thing and that is about Grave of the Fireflies. This should be at least a certificate 15, as it is one of most saddest and sensitive animated films around.

I think the one thing that distracts from Miyazaki is how he keeps pounding the audience over the head with the whole enviornmental message. Sometimes, it interupts the flow of his movies and would have worked better if he had been more subtle about it.

I saw this in the theaters many years ago and I pretty much thought it sucked pointless boring balls. To be nice, I can perhaps be open to the suggestion that maybe I'm just not cultured enough to appreciate the depth and genius of Japanese animation cinema.

I have to say, Gibli Studios makes the best animated movies in ever. Not the best anime, because NOTHING can beat Crayon Shin-Chan!

Akira still wins as one of the best full-feature animation in my book. Still being the most expensive animated film in history, I can't see anything else that can top it.
