Hi guys, I'm experiencing this really strange and irritating problem:
I just finished watching a DVD using the macbook, and I was going to bed, so I selected the "shutdown" option from the menu to shutdown the macbook.
However, after the macbook "shuts down", and after I was really to put the macbook to the laptop bag, the white indicator light for the sleeping mode is still flashing, so I thought to myself, ok, I must not have properly shut down the macbook.
So naturally I tried to reawaken the macbook and properly shut it down, but long and behold, the thing just refuse to turn on, no matter how long I hold the power button, nothing happens.
I followed the trouble shooting guide on the macbook user's guide, and on the bottom of the macbook the battery indicator is 4 lights, so it can't be the battery running low. And because the macbook is still in sleeping mode, I don’t know if it’s safe for me to remove the battery, as the owner’s guide suggests.
What should I do?
Should I take it to the Mac store? Even though I bought it online. I tried to call apple tech support (I have apple care, but it’s too late now they are off work).
Thanks a lot for the tips and/or helps.
I’m just kind of pissed since I like macs, and I expect higher quality than this form apple.

Plug it in, take the battery out, hit a few keys and see if it'll wake from it's sleep. You can also force a shutdown/reboot by holding command-option-control-power for a few seconds.
You can take your mac to the apple store and they'll support it.

Roger,
Take it directly to an Apple store. We've always received excellent support and service from Apple. If there is a problem they will fix it by either providing instruction should that be needed or replacing/repairing what's needed. Don't do anything that would void the warranty.

Force it, like literally hold down the power button and see what happens. I've never read the Apple manual, but hey, when those things don't turn on you can make them turn on. Anyways, just take it to the Apple store.
nm, just pull out the battery and see what happens.

hey guys, thanks for all the pointers.
I took out the battery and then put it back, and it works now!
I called apple care (since i bought the 3 year warranty), and that's what the tech support person suggested. I asked her for the cause of the computer not being able to start, and she said maybe it's due to something about "logic" in the computer board being screwed up, and the computer basically came to panic mode and so won't be able to start it, and doing the battery routine restores the computer to the default setting.
anyways.....looks like it wasn't due to faulty hardwares.....
all is well with the world again.

I was gonna do that if apple care tech support couldn't resolve it.

"logic board" - mother board problem, you might as well take it there because that might relaly fuck you over later on.

if it happens again, then yeah i'd be concerned about it...but i think as of now this can be considered a fluke. one thing you can do is run a disk permissions check and disk check to see if your hard drive's os files are associated correctly....other than that, i think you're fine.
hell you're in a lot better situation than me. i dropped my powerbook a year ago, and it hasn't been the same since. i got the hd replaced and everything, but it's still really trippy sometimes. boot up would take minimum 7 minutes. and i've tried everything, ram test, reinstalls, everything except for replacing the hd or logicboard....really sucks balls. i figure i'd wait another 2 years before buying another laptop, as of now i'm stuck using my old toshiba laptop from 5 years ago...which actually isn't that bad. i guess i'm a "switcher" the other way...although not by choice

oh wow.....well for my lack of intelligence, i substitue for extreme caution, so I'm unlikey to drop my macbook anytime soon.
but....switching back to windows.....
man, even with my bitching about apple and its various minor annoyances...
I can never imagine ever going back to windows again....;)

no prob, just go to the applications folder, go to "utilities" and then there should be a icon that says "disk utility". from there you can click on the hard drive icon on the left hand column and it'll give you the option to: verify or repair disk permissions (basically check or repair the operating system's file associations) or verify the disk (as in the physical disk, aka hardware, not a software check). you'll notice that the repair disk option is grayed out, this is because you can't boot on the same disk you're gonna try to repair, so you can only verify it. so basically, you should verify the disk, and if there are errors, put in the OSX dvd, reboot the computer while holding down the "c" on the keyboard (this lets you boot from the optical drive instead of the hd), and then when the dvd loads, the menu bar on the top, should have the option of using disk utility off your os x dvd. when you run disk utility off that, that's when you can repair the disk. ....whew!

Heh, I do that everyday since I've got an iMac at the office and a PC at home. Now that I've got a two button mouse at the office, I'm pretty much indifferent between the two (that mouse that came with the iMac, while pretty, is really a POS). The Mac and OSX are definitely prettier and more elegant than my Dell running XP, but I know my way around the PC a lot better. It'll be interesting to see which way I go when I make my next computer purchase...

I went down to the apple store yesterday to get a MacBook. They didn't have what I wanted, which was a white 2.0 ghz min ram max hd 'book (I ain't paying $150 extra just for paint), so i had to order it online in the store. Got the rebate for a nano and printer too. Now I just have to wait. dammit.
And I got the really large hard drive because I will be installing XP. Need to be able to run both OS' comfortably for at least the next year.

Today, I ordered two gigs of ram. It appears prices are beginning to rise, so order soon if you need any.

If you have any XP CD, you can modify it to add SP2. Look into something called slipstreaming.
