this video was essentially what made Twins a guilty pleasure of mine. it's their 2002 Chinese New Year video. this was basically being played everyday, on repeat, at that public big screen that's right in front of Sogo at Causeway Bay.

note the part of the video that shows what's supposed to be a typical HK family at dinner during Chinese New Year. it shows they could afford very little food, and each dish was tiny. this basically reflected the HK economy after 9/11. that portion of the video is there to encourage HKers to stay strong through the bad economic conditions, the layoffs, and the unemployment. this theme of encouragement is something that would be repeated in other popular media such as the movie Golden Chicken (http://hkmdb.com/db/movies/view.mhtml?id=10195&display_set=eng).

circa 1984. this is a duet by the great Leslie Cheung (張國榮) and the great Anita Mui (梅艷芳) - both died before their time in 2003, a huge loss to Chinese music. the song is called 緣份, named after the 1984 movie of the same name, for which the song was written. the movie title can probably be best translated as "Fate" or "Destiny". but as always, they give movies English names that have completely different meanings, so we ended up with Behind the Yellow Line for an English title.

the video features clips from the movie, which contains scenes with a very young Maggie Cheung and a very young Leslie Cheung. they both starred in the movie with Anita Mui. i believe this may have been Maggie's first movie because she became famous from the 1983 Miss HK pageant.

it's actually a really easy song. it's just that Teresa was the first to popularise the song and now whenever someone else sings it, s/he ends up getting compared to the way Teresa sang it, and not many people can measure up.

I love the Slants, their production is amazing. Leehom apparently learned Mandarin in college, so is probably his has such a strong American accent when he speaks Mandarin. That being said his success is amazing.
