Does anyone have or will be purchasing an LCD or plasma TV this holiday season? We're finally ditching our old CRT TV from the '90s to see what we can get for about $1200-$1500 this season.

My parents got a new 42" LCD a week ago. LCD. Something like $1299. <3 Costco. They did a lot of research before purchasing. Besides Costco has that crazy "return something whenever if you ever have a problem" warranty, so it should be ok as long as they keep the receipt. The color and sharpness are pretty good.

The biggest problem for them with plasma was that it uses too much electricity. There's also the entire fading problem with plasmas, although LCD backlights deteriorate too. Finally, the room that they put it in wasn't that big, so decreased viewing angle wasn't a problem.

LCDs and Plasmas are flashier and sleeker and definitely take up less room, but if you're looking for picture quality, efficiency in pricing, better bang for your buckarooskies, better video game playing (less ghosting), and less chances of things like fading and power consumption, you should look into DLP TVs instead.

here's a quick article

I'm probably biased because i have DLP, so shop around first, don't just listen to me!

plasma's have a burn-in problem, so u'll want to avoid that if u watch a lot of cable news programs where they have that scrolling bar thingy at the bottom. here's a recent story on lcd's vs plasmas that might be useful.

for $1200-$1500 you should be able to get 32-37 inches. Look for LG or Samsung, they have pretty much the same electronic components.

on a complete side note, for significantly less you can get 4-6 inches.

:looks around hopefully:

Newer plasmas televisions have overcome this problem. Any burn-in is temporary.

I have a 37" Panasonic plasma TV that I bought a year ago for $2700, but I expect the price for something similar is much lower now, perhaps in your range. Panasonics are known for good picture quality at reasonable cost, and I was not disappointed.

The advantage of plasmas is that they generally cost less than LCDs for the larger sizes. The main drawback is the chance of burn-in.

I did most of my research through the HDTV section at CNET:

Between LCD or Plasma only I would go with LCD. Otherwise, if you've got the cashish, DLP.

DLP is large isn't it? I need thin for wall mounting in a smaller city apartment.

yeah, a 42-inch DLP will be about 12-14 inches thick. Not for mounting on the wall.

Also, inch for inch, LCDs weigh less than plasmas, so they the better choice for mounting.

Yup LCDs are better for apartments. I have a Bravia in my pad, does the job nicely.

Hopefully I'm not too late...but definitely get the newer Bravia's. I got to see some of the new models during their testing period, and the pictures were so friggen clear it was surreal. My co-workers and I stood at different angles to see any kind of degrade but it was smooth, baby:)

I went with LCD because the plamas are still catching up in terms of resolution. More information packed into a smaller space makes for an extremely sharp picture. Quality over quantity.

You have to go bigger for 1080p in plasma. The good thing about plasma is that the contrast is really good as well as the viewing angle.
