I bought my SNES shortly after it came out, sometime in 1991 or 1992, and it was grey then. I took it out to play Chrono Trigger like 6 months ago and the bottom half of it turned tan and the top was still gray. My friend also has a SNES that changed multicolored. IF anyone still has theirs, can you check?

Heck, most of our old consoles will change color if you leave it out in the sun or some weird enviormental stuff... (higher room temp, etc, etc.) The plastic somehow warps/changes colors, etc, etc. It's one reason why many toy collectors are pissed when they see their potential cash cow lower in value when it was once grey, is now a dull yellow. Oh well, that's a toy collector's life.
(btw I don't collect toys. My friend does, and he happens to lecture me about it. Knew I had useless facts somewhere)

My SNES stopped working a few years back .. too much cartridge inserting damaged the card reader. It's gone now. :(

My SNES.. yep, gray on top, piss-yellow on the bottom. BUT! That's not all, folks! it comes with a beautiful blue outline on the ON/OFF, Reset buttons. Also has little doodles of BATMAN™ in green crayon! Yeah, I used to have a lot of fun with my SNES. And it wasn't just limited to video games!

Mine is in a plastic bag somewhere. I think I took care of it pretty well...so it doens't have that much discoloration.
But aiya...stupid power plug is all taped up so it never works. Chrono Trigger!!!! My all time favorite game! I have frog's theme as my ringtone hahaha.

The Japanese version of the SNES (Super Famicom) was by far more aesthetically pleasing and to my knowledge, the 3 people I knew who owned them never had the color changing problem.
I'll never know why Nintendo decided to make the American system all blocky and have a purple color scheme as opposed to the sleek aerodynamic multicolored shape of its Japanese counterpart. Shrug..
And another thing... What was up with that eject button? Was that retarded or what? Is it THAT hard to pull the cartridge out? No doubt the eject button, which ALWAYS broke for almost everyone who had the system, made the price of the system about 3 or 4 dollars more expenisve.

Yeah, the Super Famicom was a much sleeker box than the weird ol' SNES. For that matter, I know the original Family Computer a.k.a. Famicom was kinda whack with its red and cream color scheme and the hard wired controllers, but why did they have to put the NES into that big ol' grey box? That thing was a good 2-3 times bigger than the original Japanese machine. Ditto for the cartridges. They did the same shit with the PC Engine. That had a compact 6" x 6" footprint. When it came out here as the TurboGrafx 16, it was over twice as big! America, I swear, has got this fucked up, annoying "bigger is better" mentality. Only now are they learning that compact electronics and cars are cool...

The reason for the NES box as many may not know
is because videogames were hated by the industry.
Atari killed video games in 1983/84
Nintendo single-handedly revived the WHOLE industry.
which is why they had a monopoly on it so long.
Read the book, Game Over which is nintendo's corporate history written from the view of a third party.
Nintendo is one ruthless company and I really respect them for that
one of the most interesting books i've ever read.
Anyway. They had to disassociate the NES from a video game system
if you go back and look
the term cartridge was never used in advertising.
Game Pak or something similar was.
it wasn't a video game console. the word COnsole in fact was never used.
It was a "Entertainment System"
They did the side-loading thing so it would be more akin to a VCR.
See where Im going with this? They didn't want the video game image
it was BAD and Taboo for retailers and they wouldn't have stocked it.
good thing nintendo was so good with its marketing. or we wouldn't have the videogame market as we know it today :D

That sideloading thing was an effective marketing tactic however I clearly remember the endless hypervenilating routine of blowing on my cartridges and praying that they would work in the damn machine, hoping that the white flashy screen would stop so i could play contra.

skate or die!
that was one of the worst games ever concieved, but it was hillariously easy. it was educational too, cause it was then that i understood what "poser" meant ^_^

Nintendo taught me a lot of vocab.
Such as "simultaneous", "emit", "alternating", "tactical", "vile", "adversary"
Those are the only ones I can think of off the bat, but there were many more.

Nowadays the only reason why I keep my old SNES around is to get nostalgic with some old-school Street Fighter. I still love my 8-bit NES hits over all this new stuff ^^
BTR:
Yeah, I learned 'adversary' and 'blatant' and the difference between 'simulation' and 'stimulation' from one of my old old NES strategy guides.
