I've been kicking around the idea of installing a chat room for the site, something that people can use if they want, and if they don't, we'll just keep around anyway because having that ability to communicate instantly is important.
Any suggestions on types of chat? IRC? php?

Do it. But not IRC. I hhhaaaaaateeeee IRC. I'm down with the PHP.
But hell, why don't we just open a chat on AIM and leave it open?

AIM would be the easiest because it's all there already and people are familiar with it. not only that, all you'd need to do is add a link on the site and it would be ready to go. the geek in me wants to say IRC (i actually wrote an IRC client as a Java applet before :) ), but i think in this day and age, more people are familiar with AIM.

Just wondering, is there a way to join an AIM chatroom without using the actual AIM client? ie, some open source project...

not sure if it supports AIM chatrooms, but there's a web-based version of AIM. i think it's on www.aim.com (http://www.aim.com)

What don't you like about IRC...? It's kinda ugly, I agree...but doesn't put too much stress on the server...

I deleted IRC. I never used it for anything. I guess I used it to DL a lot of VCDs and crap like that... If you guys wanna make a chatroom on it, that's cool with me. I probably won't frequent it, though... I don't wanna download it again. =x
It's ugly, yeah, and it's kind of irritating to use. At least for me. The whole server thing... just annoyed me. I like AIM chat rooms where all you need to do is put in a name.

What the heck is an IRC or php?
For a computer illiterate person...... :D
I like IRC and if your comp. has telnet (which it should), you shouldn't have to d/l an IRC program again.

?
I suppose you're right, but you'd have to speak raw IRC commands. I take it you meant logging in to a shell account?
To the person that asked, IRC is one of the oldest (1993) and probably the most open standard chat protocol on the internet. It is based on the concept of conference chats inside channels (read: rooms) and allows for private one-to-one chat. You will need an IRC client. If you have an all-in-one chat client like Trillian, it has IRC support built in. There are also many web-to-IRC gateways (usually Java-based).
PHP is a web scripting language. Go to http://www.php.net for more info.

well there's also a whole slew of we-based irc clients out there. and i believe mIRC is free?
yeah ism but raw commands aren't difficult. As long as you have the server name you're linked. The commands are easy to memorize and all start with / <command> (i.e. /name to change name).
SWK - mIRC is free.

I think IRC might be the easiest solution. Anyone want to volunteer setting this up...?:)
I'd be willing to help. Someone needs to choose an existing network or create an IRC server. An appropriate pre-existing network should have multiple servers friendly to several geographic locations, clones (since any java applet users will all come from the same IP), optimally Chanserv (so the channel can't be taken over) and possibly Nickserv. Setting up an IRC server is a huge undertaking and I recommend against it, since it poses a security risk to whoever runs it. If someone is willing to do that though, I can help them.
Some IRC networks that could be suitable: Galaxynet, DALnet, Newnet. I recommend Newnet since they have Chanserv and Nickserv, and offer a Java-based gateway to their servers on their website. http://www.newnet.net

well, chatrooms don't work for me in general, as i've tried the other public ones. when i click on the link, it opens to a search engine page and says no results. so i have no idea what's going on.

Is AIM your default messaging program?
When signed in on AIM, click on MY AIM, edit options, edit preferences.
Under the Sign On/Off menu, there is a box that you can check to make AIM your default messanger. Check that.

actually if anything, it might be an outdated version of IE. the browser has to recognise that it's supposed to run AIM with that fake URL.

I have IE 6.0.xxxxxx and AIM 5.1.xxxxx and Win XP. Oh, I also have that default IMer box checked off way beforehand.

Has anyone really been even monitoring the AIM chatroom of YW tho? I mean like to at least get a head count at different hours and such......maybe it's just me and my erradic insomniatic sleeping tendencies, but I never really see anyone in the AIM YW chatroom.....if AIM is as frequently used as I'm assuming is used about the other YW users, why wouldn't people go to the chat room? And if the users didn't go to an existing room.....well, if an IRC account/room is set up, what's the guarantee of people actually showing up?
