Anyone who needs to input Chinese chars might want to try a handy little JS proggie courtesy of MDBG.net. Go to http://www.mdbg.net/chindict/chindict.php# and click on the "Type Chinese" link on the left (you'll need to allow popups on this site for it to work). It's pretty self-explanatory; as you type in pinyin (or other inputs, but I use pinyin mostly), it automatically displays possible characters. Hit "Enter" to select the first entry or the corresponding number for the characters. It does compound words too. Supports all modern browsers for the most part(including Opera).
Away for a few weeks and the first subforum I go to is Technology. Definitely a geek...

pinyin and other Chinese input methods comes with Windows XP. but a lot of times a computer maker might not have installed Asian language support with the OS.
i imagine Macs also have Chinese input methods. how about Linux? you probably have to install something?

You can do Chinese input in linux. It's a pain in the ass, but it can be done. It's nowhere near as well integrated as in OSX or Windows. Viewing Chinese is pretty easy to set up though.
For both Windows and Mac, there are Input Methods you can purchase or add that are much better than what's built in. For Mac, I really like QIM (QuickCore IM) for pinyin.

(also shows FireFox with HanziBar which provides mouse over translations w or w/o tooltip; HanziBar does C->E and E->C)

For learning Chinese, Wenlin is great.

the keyword is, PURCHASE.
Openvanilla is great for other input methods and free; QIM is fantastic for pinyin. $20 is not that much. :)
this is a really handy tool, thank you.
