my sister found this one yahoo a couple of days ago. so i guess it's not really "current" events. i found it odd AND funny because I had this misconception that women in Iran didn't have much freedom and oppressed under their husbands.
GUESS not!!
TEHRAN (Reuters) - An Iranian woman cut off her henpecked husband's ear after he dared to query why she was late coming home, the Entekhab newspaper reported on Saturday.
"My wife does judo and she gets angry very easily," the man, who was not identified, told a court in southern Tehran.
"I'm not allowed to say anything she doesn't like and if I disobey her, she beats me up," he said.
One night, after he challenged her late arrival home, she took out a knife, sliced off one of his ears and put it in the palm of his hand.
His wife, however, was unrepentant.
"My husband pokes his nose in my business, so I cut off his ear to teach him a lesson," she told the court.
The judge released the woman on bail and ordered police to carry out further investigations.

well let's see ... from the main page, I see "Wife cuts off husband's ..." then I come in here and realise it isn't that bad after all. ahh ...
oh yeah, as for the social angle, women and people in Iran in general have more freedom than you might expect. for example, they have totally uncensored, unfirewalled internet access. a few English-language female bloggers, even.

well that's cuz real life is kinda strictly controlled by a bunch of religious police bastards. but Iranian students are protesting nearly every day, so don't expect the dictatorship to last long.

I'm seriously thinking Islam really is a fanatical religion
...and christianity doesn't have it's share of fundamentalist fanatics? <_<

Christian fundamentalism to me at least is different from Islamic fundamentalism.
uhh yea and thats why we have schoolkids from Kansas going around yelling:
"God Hates Fags"
"Thank god for Sept. 11, he punished those who support Fags"
Schoolchildren for crying out loud.

I have'nt heard that before too. im gonna side with morientes on this one. it seems like islamic interpretation is more akin to fundamentalist radicalism than say christianity, judaism or even buddhism.

really? Hmm, a bunch of Kansas High School Children recently came to the Bay Area to protest the showing of a play that involved gay characters and addressed homosexual issues. They held up signs that had exactly those messages written on them
My school has some pictures of them (to try to get people to become youth activists and stop the ignorance that the people from Kansas were showing) on the message board and their ignorant protest signs, so if i can, i might be able to scan one in for you guys.

It could have been worst, she could have cut off something important.

a thought: given that Iranian newspapers are state-censored by some Vice and Virtue type guys ... is it possible this is a euphemism? Kinda the same thing as "they took turns counting the number of lights on the ceiling" ...
