well....it takes a certain amount of chargers before the battery goes out...

i think like 500 charges or something.

so the moral of the story is...

don't charge your ipod frivolously. only charge it when it must be done, like when it's completely discharged.

According the geniuses at the Apple store genius bar, the iPod should be able to handle all that recharging.

Surely there's a defined limit to current rechargable battery technology anyway, where's the dirty little secret it not knowing rechargable batteries don't last forever?

All rechargeable batteries degrade, even sony ones. Is this really new territory?

I think part of the problem is that the battery isn't user replaceable, or at least you wouldn't want to try to replace it.

You know, when I first saw this thread, I thought it would be about the sweatshop troubles, especially the part where apple representatives said everything was fine when the manufacturing company execs later admitted to breaking chinese labor laws.

That is a shame. There was an article in the SF Chronicle (http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?file=/chronicle/archive/2006/08/14/EDG0SJ7M3V1.DTL) about that recent.

The actual newspaper article actually had a feisty image to go along with the article, showing a sillouette of a person with his iPod and his teeshirt having some saying about supporting sweatshop labor.

If there was ever a chance for Creative, Sony, iRiver, etc. to sling some mud and get away with it, this would have been the chance. They could have funded a guerilla campaign to blast Apple over it. But they missed their chance. Too bad, so sad.

i dont know what everyones complaining about.
replacement batteries are like 20 or 30 bucks for aftermarket batteries.
it is pretty easy to change the battery too.
even on the supposedly "Hard" 3rd gen ipod i have.

and apple only charges 39 or 49 or something like that.

the aftermarket batteries are actually better than the apple ones.
they boast larger batt capacity.

Replacing the battery is a process that is quite likely to incur much scratching. It's $59 if you have it done by Apple, and that was a relatively recent change when a lot of people complained; it used to be $99. If you've seen the inside of an iPod, one question should pop up: for the sake of the customer, why didn't they make the battery user replaceable? After all, they've got plenty of space. Ask yourself why there are more complaints about the navigation wheel being defective with later generations. Answer: to maximize profits by (1) not having to shoehorn a customer-friendly interface for the battery (2) encourage people to just buy a new iPod (as Stevie J. said himself during an interview with Wired, his goal is to get you to buy a new iPod every year.) and (3) the CLick Wheel is now designed and built by Apple instead of their old partner Synaptics. Btw, frankly I liked the 3rd Generation design a lot better; the completely touch-sensitive interface was a lot cleaner.

Not sure of how Creative, others et al, have their stuff made. But I'm assuming from your post, that they do it the fair labor way.
