who the hell thought this ad was a good idea anyway? i don't know whether to laugh at the ridiculousness or just hang my head in disappointment.

This is nothing new for Sony and their PSP ads (recall those "ethnic" cartoon commercials, as well as the graffiti ads, and those subway posters). They seem to operate under the impression that any publicity is good publicity. But I'm really not sure that works as well for relatively expensive consumer electronics as it does for clothing, books, movies, music, etc.

I don't see anything particularly wrong with it.

i don't see why their marketting team has to operate under that impression. it's not like they have lots of competition out there as do most consumer-driven industries.

i wonder which ad agency did this.

kinda stupid....

Their marketing team is just stupid. No matter how provocative they make the advertisements, ultimately they're still just selling a friggin' video game system. Making these funky ads really isn't going to open up the market any by getting people to see video games in a different light. I suppose it helps with branding, but really, what do non-gamers care about the "PlayStation Portable?" But what do I know, I'm no marketing expert.

i wonder what the models thought and if they had to go through many.
but then again, models really don't get to pick and choose what they do.

Here are a couple other pics from the series:

http://www.joystiq.com/2006/07/04/ad-critic-sonys-racially-charged-psp-ad/

According to the entry, Sony said: "All of the 100 or so images created for the campaign have been designed to show this contrast in colours of the PSPs, and have no other message or purpose."

Mmmm...okay. In Sony's defense, the pics don't all seem to show white person dominating black person. Still, what a weird/stupid way of showing a contrast in colors for a video game system.

Paris Hilton-esque white chick grabs black man's cheek with menacing look on her face while looking down at him and he's wearing a "I sho' can dance fo' you!" suit? You're right, not dominating at all.

I'm surprised this wasn't a japan thing, I would've understood but that it happened here...wow...japanese must've concepted it though, not to sound like Michael Crichton or anything

You're right, not dominating at all.I was referring to the third pic on the page in which the black person is on top of the white chick and is likely saying something to the effect of, "you disrespect me like that ever again, you stupid white bitch, and I will kill you." Still, the ads are stupid.

Geez. Looks like we were all fooled.

Edit: If the black woman is Black PSP-tan, I'm proud to own my black PSP. I'd hit it.

My first thought is: What's wrong with the white chick's hand? Does she have some uncontrolled hand spasm?

Then I think, it would be hilarious to shoot a hole in the right central area of the billboard. All in good fun! Now, that's more classy.
