back when Texas was part of Mexico, some Anglos wanted to move into Texas to start up their own plantations. The Mexican government told them that some of them could come and do it on three conditions:
1. must convert to Catholicism
2. no slavery allowed, all slaves must be freed upon entering Texas
3. must swear allegiance to Mexico
at first this worked and a few Anglos came and followed the rules. But once word got around, many Anglo illegal immigrants started flooding in from Tennessee and Kentucky and they didn't follow the rules. They brought slavery, protestantism, and an idea that they could take Texas for their own. Pretty soon there were more Anglos and slaves in Texas than there were Mexicans. These illegal aliens rebelled and fought against Mexico so that they could keep slaves and be independent. Eventually Texas became an independent nation called the Republic of Texas until later it was annexed by the USA. This is what Mexico suspected was the plan all along.
Nowadays, when Mexicans migrate to Texas they are called the "illegal immigrants" even if they are 100% indigenous and in Anglo schools the history lessons say that the Anglos who fought at the Alamo were heros fighting for freedom and not for slavery or their "right" to exterminate natives.

That was so wrong! I didn't know about that. This is really informative. I wonder how many Americans today know about that part of history.

If you want to know more about this I suggest Jose Angel Gutierrez. He has written only a few books and they are light reads since he has spent most of his life in action forming and leading political parties like La Raza Unida in the southwest.
