DONGDUCHEON, South Korea (AP) -- A U.S. military jury has acquitted an American soldier of negligent homicide charges in the road deaths of two South Korean girls. Activists angrily dismissed the trial as a sham and said they would hold protests.

my folks are over there and the base they are attached to had alerts going up... they sent the kids home from school and all of that jazz... the Coreans are p.o'd about this one....
with the short Corean temper, i would not be surprised if there was an incident very shortoly....
i can let the fact that it was an accident go, but INNOCENT of NEGLIGENT HOMICIDE. How the fuck did they pull they one out.

Fuckin bullshit!
I'm not gonna claim racism at all, but I don't see how this is a fair trial!
You have a serviceman on trial by a soldier judge, a soldier jury, and two soldier lawyers. FUCK THAT!
If killing someone after not noticing live soldiers telling you to stop and your superiors trying to contact you to tell you to stop , but you don't have your headphones on, then the next time i run thru a red light or stop sign i better not get a ticket.
FUCK this. I'm gonna protest in front of the U.S. embassy.

From what I hear from native Coreans, the U.S. military gets away with things like this all the time there. Half the time, even the Corean police won't arrest a soldier for flagrantly breaking the law because it's too much trouble translating.
This is ridiculous though. Shameful.

Oh, I read a Korea Herald article that says that only the commander is not guilty.
The driver's tiral is soon.

This is not over yet. I don't know why people are upset. Only the commander was found not guilty. It could be that the driver was driving too fast or any number of things.
Other things... if the prosecutor did not get enough evidence, what can the jury do? Say he is guilty anyway? If they say they did not do a thorough enough investigation, where is their proof? Did they say this just because they are mad or do they have more proof for the prosecutor that the prosecutor refuses to use? Is the truth being covered up?

This is an email that I got from my father this morning in regards to this. He is stationed at Osan Air Base with the Department of Defense as a Civilian High School teacher.....
Several months ago a GI vehicle ran over and killed two Korean sisters on their way to a birthday party up near Camp Casey--up nesar the DMZ. This insensed the Koreann radicals and they have been having demonstrations ever since. This week a court martial was held for the two drivers charged with negligent homicide. Both were found not guilty.
Americans have beeen warned not to go to Yongsan and for certain not to go North of Seoul as it is off limits. Pedestrian traffic in the area north of Seoul is prohibited and the GI curfew is at 10 at night. We expect Anti American demonstrations throughout the Republic this weekend and, from what we saw on tv, demonstrations at Yongsan--the Eighth Army and UN headquarters got a tad violent today. I doubt anything will happen here at Osan as it takes about an hour for people to come down from Seoul and it's too much of an effort for the really hot to trot radicals, but maybe.
At any rate, it isn't only the war on terrorism, crime, Palestine , Kosovo, Bosnia, etc. etc. and all the other bad things happening in the world, it has gotten around to us here in Korea, also. Something you probably won't see on tv.

An accident.......That's it.......There is wrong doing here...
Example:
Rebecca Gayhart; runs over a kid.....It was an accident.......She got off.
Like "Ren28" stated, only the commander was found not guilty...........Wait until the complete trial is over before you cry injustice.
Stop letting race cloud your judgement.......If it was an Asian lady behind the wheel of a SUV and accidently hit a little white kid because the kid accidently walk in front of the vehicle, you would call it an accident. If she got off, you wouldn't cry injustice. Because it was an accident
You do not know what really happen out there. You are only making assumption from the media.....As we all know, the media can manipulate the story to favor one side. It doesn't a rocket scientist to do that.
Stop getting all work up about, until the conclusion of the trial.
dude, it's not a race issue.
and you're comparing two totally different situations..

i think emotions are running too high in this case. I agree w/ Ren; we should wait and see what happens w/ the driver. BTW what was the commander's role specifically? was he in the truck or was he just around the area and could have commanded the driver via radio?

the tank comanders job is to have situational awareness and issue commands to the turret crew and also the driver who is isolated in a cockpit only communicatable by radio. mostly the commander sights targets and orders to fire...his view is via hexogonal periscope and he can sorta see 360 degrees around but not directly infront or behind or to the side. The m1 abrams tank they were using is basically take 2 ferrari testarosa's and put them side by side. or 3 honda accords in a row in width and the lenght is bout the same as a ford excursion. so he has sum serious blind spots.

Under a bilateral defense treaty, the U.S. military has jurisdiction over American soldiers accused of crimes while on duty, though it can allow South Korea to try them on a case-by-case basis.

would SK rather take it fr America or fr NK? I would personally LOVE for us to cut down on def spending and pull out of SK. It's time they started putting the $ in their economy to good use instead of just spending it in PC cafes.

Well, SK is perfectly capable of defnding itself, so if they wanna have a 5 year draft instead of a 2 year one, then they can ask the USA to leave.
The driver, Walker, got off scott free with negligable homicide on the grounds that his comm system was broken and that his visibility was blocked. WTF is that? How can you drive on the road if your visiblity is blocked? If the road turns you will not be able to follow. How he didn't see the two girls is beyond me.

Dude, the South Korean Army is one of the toughest ARmies in the world.... ROK Army, in an even number to number fight could kick most countries asses. The country that would beat them, Israel. How did Israel become one of the most lethal Armies in the world pound for pound.... they were trained initially by the ROK army... so the US pulling out of SK is not going to mean that SK is going to spend a whole lot more on defense.
Only 37,000 American Troops are in Korea, in a country of 35 Million... that is not bad at all... if anything it is tiny. There are more American Soldiers in Central Germany than in all of South Korea.

to simulate what a tank driver sees and what he has to deal w/ when driving,
- go get a paper box that can cover ur window,
- then cut a 6' inch by 3 inch slit in it and then go try driving around.
- oh i forgot to say now block off all your windows except the front window
- then add 4 passengers (even if its a 2 seater). then u got a good simulation of what a tank driver sees.

37,000 is still a reasonable force, but more than just the numbers alone, they're more a symbol of U.S. protection than anything else, I think (and "bilateralism").

If that's the case, then maybe they need to be more careful when they drive...!

well honestly thats what the commander does, the driver just moves forward or stops because his field of vision is crap.

I don't know the exact situation and the exact terrain but it would seem to me that if the comm was broken, they should not have been using that vehicle that day. If the comm broke during the mission... they still should have done something to make it safer to drive. But whether or not they can be guilty as charged because the comm broke is beyond me because I don't know too much about law. Needless to say, these things should not happen and they should take measures to be more safe in the future.

basic psychology. you protect people, but of course they're not grateful, they just get resentful that you are powerful enough to protect them, instead of them being able to protect themselves. See page 60 of the following study on attitudes of overseas countries towards Americans:
http://www.bu.edu/news/releases/2002/defle...leur/report.pdf (http://www.bu.edu/news/releases/2002/defleur/report.pdf)
South Korea, for which American soldiers died in the Korean war, has like a 70% more negative attitude towards us than China, who was our enemy in that war. Hmm ...

I agree. Just say no to drugs and flamebait.
It's never so easy as to just say Corea doesn't appreciate the USA. Realistically, the US intentions are not just benevolence for little South Corea. We are occupied there for our own protection and strategic advantage.
Yeah the USA is supposed to help but from the average Corean citizens viewpoint, they hear about and see US soldiers who literally get away with rape and murder and simply cannot be prosecuted by Corean law, half the time because of a language barrier or politics. The bad press and incidents between Corea and the USA these past two years have only snowballed into more feelings that the "US is out to get them." That is, if incidents like No Gun Ri during the Corean War weren't enough.

isn't it more like 60%?
anyway, come on now, they surveyed teenagers. china's teenagers don't know shit about the korean war. i'm not surprised at the difference in overall feelings towards the u.s.
but those are interesting results. some i expected but some were surprising. i was particularly interested in the differences between china and taiwan. and i'm quite surprised that taiwan's general feelings toward the u.s. isn't more postive. i was also quite surprised that pakistan's general feelings toward the u.s. isn't more negative.
Those poor girls. Their families must be so sad.
