Kung Fu Headed for the Big Screen
Source: Variety May 24, 2006
Warner Bros.-based Legendary Pictures is bringing Kung Fu to the big screen after acquiring film rights to the 1970s TV series from series creator Ed Spielman.
Variety says Legendary has optioned a screenplay from Spielman and Howard Friedlander, also a writer on the original series.
The film is expected to explore the events on which the TV show was based and the origins of the main characters.
David Carradine immortalized the lead role of Kwai Chang Caine, a Shaolin monk who flees China for the American Wild West, where he helps the powerless.

Apparantly they're trying to make it a tad more accurate and get an actual actor that is both races as opposed to Carradine and his makeup thing.

i thought it was originally written as a full-blooded Chinese character but they changed him to be a mixed race character for Carradine?

David Carradine makes William Hung look like Bruce Lee. I rented the old Kung Fu movie a long time ago out of curiosity and the action scenes were so slow and terrible that they actually looked better and more comprehensible when you fast-forwarded everything. They could have at least found a white guy that was remotely physically able for the part.

Now that you mention it, what was Chuck Norris doing back then? I know he still looked the same as he does now, that dude is well-preserved.

Why don’t they just cast the role with Jet Li?
If a 100% white guy can play a hapa, why not a full-Asian guy as well?
(Bruce Lee was one-quarter German, so he was already hapa.)

Will he ever find his half-brother?
And what half is he?
And whose to say that he would be accepted?
And how long can that one outfit go -- the one he wears everywhere roaming the countryside. It must smell like shit.

man, if I have to see carradine in that yellowbook commercial one more time
does carradine even know kung fu or is it all camera cuts?

Like I said, my main beef is that Carradine moved slower than my grandma and had all the flexibility and agility of a grizzly bear trapped in a puddle of molasses. The fact that he's a white guy was just an extra slap in the face after my action-film-loving soul was being clotheslined and then driven into the ground via piledriver.

what I wonder is how can Tarantino be a selfproclaimed asian film nut and choose this artificial flavoring to be his main bad guy
Kung Fu was a Nielson's Top Ten show in the ratings for its first season. The show stumbled as the stories got worse and worse. The third season was a train wreck. Absolutely horrible. But it is a cult hit and the original had a great story line. It is progress that they are going to hire an Asian or partial Asian actor this time around. Hopefully the writing will be good as well. If done correctly, it could be a very good movie.
