I noticed the Eagles drafted a linebacker from cal poly named Chris Gocong. The guy doesn't look black or white. Is he asian? Never known someone with that name. He'll be big for a linebacker: 260 lbs. The eagles traded up to get him in the 3rd round so he's no throwaway player. He'll probably be a starter for them in a year or two.

So I guess his grandfather is vietnamese. The vietnamese are known for producing excellent linebackers:wink: Wow, his girlfriend is a fox. He stays in touch with his asian relatives.

Well, if I'm not mistaken Gocong is a province or county in Vietnam. On his myspace site two asian girls left a message about how their mother spoke with his grandfather about an upcoming family union.
This guy's got a great opportunity in Philly. I read they want to make him into a strong-side linebacker. The incumbent, Dhani Jones, was disappointing last season. Gocong could replace him this year if he learns their defense fast enough.

The Eagles hardly ever start rookies. Jones was a dissapointment, but Gocong will have to play special teams this season and then try to break into the starting lineup next season. The Eagles defense is complex and Gocong is going from being a DI-AA defensive end to an NFL SLB. That's a big transition. I'd wouldn't expect to see him play much before 2007. The Eagles drafted a WLB in the 2nd round last year and he never sniffed the field on defense, so I wouldn't expect much from GoCong this year.
That's a hell of a leap of logic to figure that he's part Vietnamese. I mean its plausible, but you could be putting together possibilities and seeing what you want to see. What if the girls were hapa and their mother is white. What if the Asian girls were adopted by white folks? Could be lots of other possibilities.
I hope he does well though, regardless of his ethnicity, cause I'm a big Eagles fan. If he's actually part Vietnamese, all the better.

If he's vietnamese I hope that is made clear soon because eagle fans may be butchering his name. Those bunch of hoagie-eatin, blue collar workin, south philly jerks think his name is pronounced 'go-kong' so they're calling him king kong! It's like how people butcher the name 'Nguyen'. I've never known anyone with that name. Can anyone confirm whether it's vietnamese?

Yes, Nguyen is a Vietnamese name.
^ I think he was wondering whether Gocong is a Vietnamese name.

Heh, the original post is far from clear. I was just giving the guy the benefit of the doubt.

Gocong is not a Vietnamese surname. It has multiple syllables and therefore cannot be a real Vietnamese word. That doesn't mean the guy's not Viet, it just means his last name is not a real Viet last name. It could be some Americanized version of a real Viet last name though.

Isn't 'Go Cong' a city in vietnam not far from saigon? What other ethnicity could it be?

Go Cong is 2 words. Gocong is one word with 2 syllables. Remember, the entire Vietnamese language has no words with more than 1 syllable. Like I said, it could be some Americanized version of a Vietnamese name, but it is not a real Vietnamese last name.

I'm going to take a stab in the dark and say he's not Viet...don't pretty much the vast majority of all Korean, Chinese (except for like Au Yeung), and Viet last names have only a single syllable? It sounds more like some type of Pacific Islander or Samoan surname...plus he looks more like a PI and there be some big-ass Samoan mofos.

The two girls who left a message on his myspace site about a family reunion definitely looked southeast asian. I've heard that hapa people are mistaken for pacific islanders or latinos all the time.

No. Not unless you say it the freaky American way of "Nu-wen." The closer Americanized pronounciation is "Win."

He gets to put professional football player under occupation on his mid 6 figure tax return his first year out of college. I'd say that he wins at life.
