This will be a thread consisting of me and probably only me commenting on the Phillies throught the 2006 season.
2nd place in the NL East right now with a long homestand against bad teams coming up. Its time to catch the Mets for first.

What is the Phillies' secret to beating the Braves?
Seems like something the Mets are never ever able to do

So who is Philly's regional rival now that Baltimore's is Washington? Is it gonna be Toronto?
lethal

Umm...I think they had the Red Sox last year and it might end up being Toronto (which would also be a rematch from the 93 World Series). Who really knows. I did like the Baltimore rivalry though.

The 1983 WS!
Philly-Baltimore just doesn't make as much sense as Baltimore Washington does. It certainly makes more sense than Seattle-San Diego though!

considering the braves have won something like 15 consecutive division titles (witht he first few coming while they were in the nl west), no team has beaten the braves in the regular season very much.
now if you're talking about the playoffs...that's a totally different story. everyone and their mother beats the braves in the playoffs.

With tonight's win, the Phillies are firmly in 2nd place in the division behind the Mets.

"firmly?" That half a game lead could be erased by Colorado tonight.

Or this afternoon. Game starts right now. Firmly was overstating it. I just meant sole possession of 2nd.

April records for the Phillies
2006: 10-14
2005: 10-14
2004: 10-14
I guess there's something to be said for consistency.
Dontrelle Willis has given up 8 or more runs in a game 3 times in his career. 2 of them are agianst the Phillies, including tonight.
Go Phils!

Barry Bonds hits HR #713 off Jon Lieber, an almost-upper deck shot
I was at a restaurant that showed the game, and there was a collective gasp of amazement when it happened
The Phans sure were creative with the banner they made for Bonds in the left field bleachers

8 in a row baby! 4 games behind the Mets and we've got 3 games against them coming up.
I was actually hoping that Bonds would hit 714 and 715 in Philly with the Phils sweeping the Giants. Guess he'll pass Ruth somewhere else.

False. Ryan Howard hit a HR to dead center field earlier this season which went 496 feet.

Very good pitching by both Myers and Pedro (who stays undefeated) earlier

Phils win the rubber game 2-0, with help from the rain
and the wind, which blew a David Wright HR foul
and some unreal defensive plays, especially by Rowand, who will probably miss some games due to the resulting broken nose

Video of the Rowand play (http://philadelphia.phillies.mlb.com/NASApp/mlb/news/article.jsp?ymd=20060511&content_id=1449412&vkey=news_phi&fext=.jsp&c_id=phi)
1st inning, bases loaded 2 outs. Xavier Nady up to bat for the Mets. He hits a high fly ball to center field. Rowand goes back on it and catches it on the dead run away from home plate for the third out. He immediately hits his face into the steel fence in center and breaks his nose. With blood gushing down his face, he holds the ball up to signal to the umps that he held on.
He was later helped off the field and taken by ambulance to the hospital.
Phillies won 2-0 and the Rowand play saved at least 3 runs. Gavin Floyd with a 5 inning complete game shutout for the Phillies, winning 2-0 when the game was called during the bottom of the 5th inning.
Mets leave Philadelphia with a 3 game lead over the Phillies.

After sweeping the Reds in Cincy, they go to Milwaukee and get swept. 3-3 road trip. Now back home to face the Red Sox this weekend.
2 back of the Mets and 1.5 up on the Braves.

even though he gave up the walk-off HR to Beltran in the 16th inning, Madson sure was impressive, throwing 105 pitches in 7+ innings of relief

Oh and after the loss, Cole Hamels was scratched from tomorrow's start due to shoulder soreness.

That's 5 1 run losses in a row. As in their last 5 losses have all been by 1 run. This is just depressing.

Howard breaks the Phils single-season home run record
It's remarkable how they seemed to have gotten better after trading away Abreu, Lidle, Bell, and others
And Gillick's trades of Cormier and Franklin have been helping the Phils, by them losing games for the previously wild card-leading Reds

Bringing this back...
Congrats on winning the NL East!
I'm still pissed at how the Mets fell apart, and how they (especially Glavine) laid an egg on the last day, but the Phillies went on a remarkable run to deserve it, and made a great story.
Certainly much better than the same ol' same ol', like if the Braves had won it.
If it can't be the Cubs or Indians winning the World Series, it would be pretty cool if the Phightin's do it.
I guess the Mets have made 1964 less painful, and now the same needs to be done for Mitch Williams.

I'm glad the Phils won. Even if the Mets didn't collapse, the Phils still would've tied for the wild card, so they did play well and should deserve credit for that.
I hope this becomes a Phillies success story rather than a Mets collapse story.
I'm pretty damn excited though!

Even with the collapse, if the Mets had won that last game, there would've been a 4-way tie, and it would've been really interesting to see how that played out.
Anyways, first up for the Phils will be the Rockies, who went on an amazing run of their own, capped off by the 13-inning play-in game against the Padres, quite possibly the game of the regular season. With the lineups and hitter's parks that both teams have, expect to see some games with football-like scores!

Too bad the Phillies didn't go further in the playoffs, but they ran into a Rockies team that is on one of most ridiculous runs in baseball history.
It is interesting seeing Kaz Matsui contributing so much - I think he has the most RBI of anyone in the playoffs. Mets fans seem to be either happy for him, or pissed that he didn't play like this (or the organization couldn't get him play like this) for the Mets.
I'm sure baseball fans in Japan are rooting for Sox vs. Rox in the World Series, where they would see Kaz against Dice-K and Okajima.
