View Full Version : Jobs in Asia

I am graduating this may, and am applying for many jobs, all of which are based in Japan or HK. The ones I think I'm likely to get are teaching positions, and the one I'm really hoping for is an entry-level reporting/copy-editing job at a newspaper in Tokyo.

Has anyone here held any jobs in Asia, specifically teaching? If so, did you like it? Thoughts on the subject? Thoughts on working (and thus, moving to/back to) Asia in general?

heya. i graduated 2 mays ago, and have been working in asia ever since.

i was teaching english in bangkok for about a year before i moved on to my present job.
i'm currently a writer for asia city publishing (http://www.asia-city.com) and we publish city magazines in Hongkong (HK), Singapore (I-S) and Bangkok (BK) and launching a regional magazine, Holiday Asia.

(i feel like an advert)

i DO know Holiday Asia is recruiting, it'd be helpful if you've had atleast some experience in college.

regarding teaching: nowadays i'd recommend you to get a tefl is you wanna work at a reputed school...more secure...more professional. i'm not too familiar with esl teaching conditions other than in thailand, but i imagined it'd be more strict.

here in thailand you get a range of 'english' teachers.. from back packpackers to professors. but you'd be surprised that in a lot of the language schools throughtout asia when they advert for 'native speakers'...being anglo saxon is tied in with that nativity.

but yeah. if you got any more questions or want more details let me know, i'll do what i can i :)

and early-congrats upon graduation!!
welcome to the world of i-have-to-pay-my-own-bills-now.

What kind of teaching are you talking bout, what subject?

You should get a job offer BEFORE you come to Hong Kong. (I'm there now) The Hong Kong economy seriously sucks right now and Work Visas are incredibly hard to get. Example: In a room of 33 people, I was the only one to get a visa. They're asking for special skills and proven work history right at the moment.

They'd like all jobs to go to Hong Kong citizens if possible. It will be easier for you to get a permit if a Western company hires you. The immigration office hates it if you come and then later apply for a visa. It makes it look like you were searching for jobs (i.e. taking jobs away from HK citizens) rather than a company searching you out. Augh! The struggle with immigration I went through! And I'm not even here for long! Just three months for a contract job. :pissed:
