Many people say that it is a big no-no, to do a cover version of somebody else's songs. However I believe there are some people who have done a good job to it. For example Paul Anka and Michael Buble.
However, I want to be more specific as in which artist, or group, did a good cover to which songs.
Here are some of the artist, and group, that I think did a good job (you may be able to find it about on the web if you're lucky):
Roni Size - Drop It Like It's Hot (Snoop Dogg)
Kosheen - Can't Get You Out Of My Head (Kylie Minogue)
Elbow - One Thing (Amerie)
Elbow - Independent Woman (Destiny Child)
KT Tunstall - Get UR Freak On (Missy Elliot)
Jamie Callum - Frontin (Pharrell Williama)
Arctic Monkeys - Love Machine (Girls Aloud)
Embrace - How Come (D12)
Will Young - Hey Ya! (Outcast)
Will Young - Don't Cha (Pussycat Dolls)
Lee Ryan - Best Of You (Foo Fighers)
Share your thoughts and what cover songs you heard that you think is well done.

On the Crystal Method's CSII recordings, they do a cool version of the Doors' song Roadhouse Blues.
BT does a neat version of the Doors' Break On Through.

i can strum the chords for that song and sing it at the same time. i used to like Frente a lot back in high school.
one of my favourite covers is probably Ramones' I Wanna Be Sedated by Shonen Knife. another one is an acoustic version of Kylie Minogue's Can't Get You Out Of My Head by At17.
one interesting thing i've noticed is that if done right, ballads by 80s hair bands can sound pretty good acoustic and with a quicker pace.

Mariah Carey - cover of Prince's "Beautiful Ones"
Mary J. Blige - cover of Rose Royce's "I'm Going Down" (though I admit it's nothing like the original)
Hmmmm.....................that's all I can think off the top of my head. I don't know enough about rock/alternative types of music to comment on that, and in the R&B/hip-hop world there are a lot more samples of songs than actual covers.

Hey Kenny,
Have you heard the Sugababes' cover of Arctic Monkeys' I Bet You Look Good On The Dancefloor? Ok, it's not such a great cover...
Btw, do you have mp3s of the songs you mentioned in your 1st post?

Yes, I have heard Sugababes' cover and I wasn't really convinced by it to be honest...
I realised I have a cover song to the original theme tune of Spiderman by Michael Buble. Kinda funny to hear the swing version of it.
Oh, Goldie Lookin Chain's cover to James Blunt "You're Beautiful" is a funny one too.
Which ones are you looking at in particular from the list on my 1st post, P_g?

There's some good ones, there's an Aussie bunch that's covered Alphaville that's going around - there are others, sort of escapes me right now. Need to go through collection.
I'm more interested in the ones where the artists just does it ad hoc; a good one is when Evanescence did a cover of Nivrana's Heart shaped box. There are others.

Good choice there Faithless - I remember that song too. It was first played at the Brit Awards (late 90s) before being used as a soundtrack if i'm not mistaken.
As usual, I have been looking about on the web, for you people to hear some cover songs that was done on British BBC Radio 1 in the Jo Whiley's Live Lounge session and by luck I found one so enjoy, although you may not know some of the artist, as majority of them are British - Jo Whiley's Live Lounge sessions (http://home.mattford.net/~matt/specialmusic/).

I Put a Spell on You - Nina Simone

I'll have to check it out. I'm not sure why I like asian covers. There's a mando-pop version of Big Yellow Taxi. I heard it once in a cafe; it wasn't too great but I would like to hear it again. :)

The Counting Crows' cover of Joni Mitchell's "Big Yellow Taxi."
I remember that version, it was very upbeat compared to the original.
Was listening to the radio today and they replayed one of the live lounges and I can't believe I forgot this one: Franz Ferdinand - 'What You Waiting For?' (Gwen Stefani). If you are going to try and find this, pm me instead - it took me absolutely ages.
It's quite funny hearing Scottish guys singing this ultra-high pitch song.

Can't believe I forgot about these two:
Alien Ant Farm - 'Smooth Criminal' (Michael Jackson)
Ryan Adam - 'Wonderwall' (Oasis)
I really like what Alien Ant Farm did MJ's song and it works really well. As for Ryan Adam's cover, it has a really nice acoustic sound to it and his voice really helps mellow it out.

Some group called Alpha Kenny One has a dance version of Smooth Criminal. Why rehash a uninspiring MJ song?

Why not? I think it was the bass riff to Smooth Criminal which blew me away - it's not easy to play that part.
Found a nice website for you music lovers to look at - elbo.ws (http://elbo.ws/)
This website has full of music - covers and one of acoustic sets and so. It's literally like a independent music store that holds rare album collection. Enjoy!

Did you hear those American Idol contestants hacking up the Elvis cover songs?
Been listening to some remixes of his stuff, and I like how they layered up beats around his voice.

No, I don't follow it up that much as it's shown on Sunday - that day being my sports day. In general, most contestants in pop idol are just killing the original version. Only a pinchful of them can pull it off in my opininon...

My my.... It's been a long time since I posted in here... Guess people has loss the hype on sharing cover songs.
Here are more that I found and heard on the radio:
Kano & Leo - 'Feel Good Inc'
Editors - 'Feel Good Inc'
Mylo - 'Sweet Child Of Mine'
We Are Scientists - 'Hoppipolla'
Nelly Furtado - 'Crazy'
The Kooks - 'Crazy'
The Automatic - 'Gold Digger'
I have to say that the last cover is a gem. I couldn't stop laughing with amazement when a rock band did a hip hop song. Just genuis!!!

If Jo Whiley put all the cover songs made in at Maide Vale, there is no doubt that it would be a 3 disc collection, minimum!! That would be something that I would like to have.
Thanks for the infor there! :)

I finally saw this CD out on the street and in honesty I was very disappointed with the tracklisting. Only a few artist on there did a cover, whilst the other tracks were them performing it live.
Anyway.... The usual of what I do best:
Boy Kill Boy - Maneater (Nelly Furtado)
Fall Out Boy - So Sick (Ne*Yo)
James Morrison - Valerie (The Zuton)
José González - Hand On Your Heart (Kylie Minogue)
Zebrahead - Wannabe (Spice Girls)
Kasabian - Out Of Space (The Prodigy)
Lil Chris - Sexy Back (Justin Timberlake)

There's this new album out on iTunes called, "This is Metal's Most Covered Moments of the 80's", and it features Motorhead doing "It's a Long Way to the Top".
I think there's a better version by Lemmy on an album called "Remixed to Hell: AC/DC Tribute".
But I like the way Motorhead does "Jumpin' Jack Flash" on an album called Bastards.

Those Cheetah Girls recorded Route 66.
It certainly is a pop spin on the Bobby Troup lyrics imortalized by Nat King Cole.
But there are so many good variations. Rolling Stones, Chuck Berry, etc. But it seems best in a jazz tempo.
Jazzy Nelson Riddle version can be found here (http://www.nelsonriddlemusic.com/nr_tv_rt66.htm).
I hate the Depeche Mode version.

For all The Beatles' fan out there, two weeks ago was the 40th anniversary of their album 'Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band'. The BBC (British Broadcasting Corporation) made a special documentary, where they got various artists to cover every song in the album. Here is the track listing:
Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band – Bryan Adams
With A Little Help From My Friends – Razorlight
Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds - Athlete
Getting Better – Kaiser Chiefs
Fixing A Hole – The Fray
She’s Leaving Home – Magic Numbers
Being For The Benefit Of Mr Kite - Jamie Cullum
Within You Without You - Oasis
When I'm Sixty Four - Russell Brand
Lovely Rita – Travis
Good Morning Good Morning - The Zutons
Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band (Reprise) – Stereophonics
There are digital recording of all these songs floating around the web. For more information and to watch or hear the documentary go here: - BBC RADIO 2 - 60s SEASON - SERGEANT PEPPER'S 40th ANNIVERSARY (http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio2/events/60sseason/documentaries/sgtpeppers.shtml)
Extract:
To celebrate the 40th anniversary of the release of The Beatles' legendary album Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, multi award-winning engineer Geoff Emerick heads back into the studio to demonstrate the innovative techniques employed for the recording at Abbey Road studios back in 1967.
