A Day in the Coffee Shop

As the notes blend to Miles Davis' music
I sit diligently on my own with paper and pen
turning the crisp pages of a thin book
peering at the early morning sky
watching the hand designate the time
from the corner of my eyes.

The sun glaring to the eyes
as I yawn in the middle of my music
and watching the departing seconds of time
prompting me to squeeze the pen
a stylus bluer than than the sky
richer than the lake in the book.

Streams ebbing across the pages of my book
soothing to the spirit of these naked eyes
it is mid day judging from the dimmed sky
and the steady beat of the music
my hands are tired from gripping my pen
writing along the quiet passage of time.

How quickly the tea cools with time
as I sit here admiring the colors in this book
and my hands sit idle while holding my pen
delighting in the paintings feasted before my eyes
and in the background the oboist plays his music
as the evening sets in by the sun's departure from the sky.

The orange meeting the shades of dark blue sky
reminding me of how much little time
I have here in this cafe enjoying the jazz music
and analyzing the techniques compiled in my book
a collection of art fulfilling the soul through my eyes
and the journal I write with my ball-point pen.

It is indeed this dark blue ink that makes my pen
the same color that darkens the sky
that heavily weighs on these brown eyes
allowing me to see that it is time
to finish writing the words that encapsulate my book
and walk away to the fading of the music.

The music makes the pen move,
the eyes dance through the book,
and time pass with the changing sky.

This poem took me so long to write.
;)

It's called a sestina. It's hard to create and explain. The easiest way I can explain is by asking you to look at the first stanza. The last words on each line end with music, pen, book, sky, time, and eyes. The other stanzas also have these words but in a different order. The order follows this pattern:

1=music 2=pen 3=book 4=sky 5=time 6=eyes

The following stanzas will go in this order:

615243
364125
532614
451362
246531

The poem ties together from start to finish. If you notice the last word in the last line of each stanza also begins as the first word in the first line of the next stanza. Comprendez?
