I thought this was a insightful letter about the dangers when people vote due to a politician's stand on a single issuse:

To the Editor:

Re "Three Decades After Roe, a War We Can All Support," by William Saletan (Op-Ed, Jan. 22):

It is vital that the endless debate over abortion end quickly. The damage done to the United States in the last 33 years is far worse than people seem to realize.

In the United States, this one question dominates elections and Supreme Court nominations.

You elect people with the power to start wars, interpret the Constitution, use nuclear weapons and change Social Security based on their views on abortion.

Corrupt is O.K., not very bright is O.K., willing to destroy the environment is O.K., but no way will you vote for someone who disagrees with you on abortion!

Which brings two problems:

First, by putting so much focus on this one issue, you let politicians get away with murder on everything else.

Second, you necessarily elect people whose intellectual capacity enables them to look at a very complex issue like abortion and see it in simplistic black-and-white terms. The results are there for all to see.

Though I disagree with voting for someone because of their position on one issue, there's really nothing that can be done to stop people from doing so.

Sure there is; overturn Roe.i doubt that would solve the issue permanently b/c liberals would fight tooth and nail to get pro-choicers back into the court. the only thing that would stop this is if ppl voluntarily stopped having sex.

What about other issues? My response was in the context of any issue, not just abortion.

There is no issue as divisive as abortion but as VV o n g B a said it still wouldn't go away as an issue. The only way it would go away is if both parties agreed on abortion, one way or the other.

Hypothetically if the abortion issue went away we would have another issue that takes priority. Maybe jobs. Or education. Or national security.

If you feel strongly about that one issue, then you have to vote because of it. Id let any politician get away with anything if he were to make nationalized health care.
