I don't know.. what did you guys think about appearances being counted in the scoring? I abused that heavily. I don't want to go back to giving credit for holds, but there has got to be a way to make non-closer RPs valuable...

I'm fine with appearances. I was thinking instead of BA and OPS, we could do OBP and SLG.

I introduced OPS to our league for the 2004 season. But I've actually never read Moneyball. I am a long time member of SABR though.
I'm not sure I like HR as a P category. It favors relievers who pitch fewer innings. Reliervers already have the appearances and save cats. Starters have Ks and Ws. WHIP and ERA are rate stats. I can't think of another useful rate stat for pitchers that wouldn't favor starters or relievers. BB/9 and K/9 are already reflected in WHIP and K. Same with K/BB.
As for batters, I have no positive or negative thoughts on the K category. However, if we go with 6 pitching categories, we should go with 6 hitting ones and Ks would be the one to go if we cut one of those 7.
BeTheReds
02-01-2006, 09:18 PM
Well, I just thought... if a player Ks, he should be penalized.. Hmm, what about K for batters and L for pitchers. That doesn't really favor anyone, and makes it risky to send in the RP just for an app.

We can change the stat categories. SPs are more likely to get Ls than relievers and we favor relievers enough already.
Ks for hitters are no different than any other kind of out and that's already reflected in OBP. The fewer outs you make, the higher your OBP.
I actually like Hits as a stat category for hitters since we took out Avg. Maybe add BB/K ratio since its a rate stat that is neutral toward both SPs and Rs.

Can we make the draft the weekend after that, the 19th?
lethal
02-03-2006, 06:49 AM
Sure, but the evening slots were all taken by the time I registered the league last night. The draft would be either in the middle of the afternoon or at like midnight on the east coast. Middle of the afternoon is middle of the night your time.
Would Saturday or Sunday morning EST work?
I'm also going to add hits and BB/K ratio as cats.

Quick question: Do you receive points for everybody, or do IF, Util, and BN not count?
And whats the difference between SP and P, or do starting pitchers earn points when they're designated SP?
lethal
03-23-2006, 04:05 PM
Points for everyone except the BN (bench) and the DL.
All Ps, SPs and RPs get points. There's really no distinction except the pitchers you can use in each slot. I shou;d've made it all Ps or no Ps really.

As it's been plainly made obvious by my the recent transactions, I didn't like my draft either. 3 great 1st basemen... 0 backup elsewhere.

Oh, and ... there's too few people playing, so there seems to be no real room to go out and find the next new prospect. It seems like all the teams are loaded with stars.

Two days in... and I'm even more confused. Can someone tell me the exact point values per stat?
It doesn't work that way. Basically since there are 8 teams, you are assigned points based on your ranking in each of the categories we have. There are 14 categories, so the lowest score you can possibly have in this game (getting 8th place in every category) is 14. The highest score possible (first place in each category) is going to be 116, but generally people will have scores between 40 and 80.
If that doesn't make sense, follow the following example:
Lets say we are in a 3 team league using only 3 categories, R, H, and OBP.
Team R H OBP
A 6 7 .400
B 5 8 .420
C 3 3 .300
Team A is first in runs (3pts) second in hits (2pts) and 2nd in OBP (2pts). Total is 7 pts.
Team B is 2nd in rund (2pts) First in hits (3pts) and first in OBP (3pts). Total is 8 pts.
Team C is last in all 3 categories and gets 1pt for each. Total is 3pts.
Thus B is in first place with the most pts.
If however tomorrow, Team A gets 2 hits and Team B gets none, then Team A would have more hits than Team B, and move into first place in hits. Team A would gain one point for advancing one place in a category (2nd to 1st) and Team B would lose 1 pt for being demoted 1 place (1st to 2nd). Thus Team A's total points would be 8 and B's would be 7, assuming team C didn't pass either of them.
Oh, and ... there's too few people playing, so there seems to be no real room to go out and find the next new prospect. It seems like all the teams are loaded with stars.
There are 30 MLB teams to draw from and we are playing with only 8 teams. We therefore have roughly the best 200 players in MLB baseball
snailpoo

But then how did people end up with negative points?

I tried to make the rosters a little bigger so we'd have to dig deeper to get players. I didn't want to make it NL only or AL only. There's still good players out there that get hot in the middle of the season or there are mid-season call-ups.
Last year I dropped Victor Martinez in May cause he was hitting about 220. He ended up as the best C in baseball. That was a mistake. Jon Garland and John Patterson were surprises last year. They're out there, even in an 8 team league.
But then how did people end up with negative points?
I don't think people have negative points. The negative numbers indicate the loss in points from yesterday to today.
Ya, we needed more people playing.
8's about how many we get in every league we do. Its usually the same 7 guys plus someone new (in this case, you). I do wish more people would play though.

Team B is 2nd in rund (2pts) First in hits (3pts) and first in OBP (3pts). Total is 8 pts.
Team C is last in all 3 categories and gets 1pt for each. Total is 3pts.
Whats the exact breakdown for points?
How many points is runs? hits? saves? obs? whip? Or is all points even between each category, and the number is awarded purely upon rank?
