I just saw this movie... and i have to say it's the best movie Jackie Chan has starred in. the movie is high-quality and there's romance that the women would enjoy and also two very attractive attresses for the men. Not to mention, this movie will be played in China, Hong Kong, India.... that's over 70% of the world's population already. When the hell will this movie get to the US?

It's not bad at all, but he needed to get rid of some of the slap stick humor during the modern-day part to be taken more seriously. Definitely one of the better movies I've seen lately.
Asian moveis (movie industries in general) gotta stop giving these backseat roles to women though.

I half-hoped to see Yimou Zhang pop up in this movie. Even a two minute cameo would have doubled my enjoyment of this film. One to buy from the VCD bargan bucket IMO.
this movie SUCKED
well i saw a bootlegged copy of it so maybe that's why. the guy that was filming it kept getting phone calls and you could hear him talkin.
i wish jackie's role was played by someone cute and younger. then i would have gotten into the love story part. this just made me wanna hurl.

I liked this movie so much, i just thought i'd add the music video.. http://www.jackiechan.com/gallery/myth_mtv.html
This movie has to be the best produced movie this year (including all those hollywood crap).
(Episode III - all computer generated... Batman - too dark, which hides the backgrounds).
This movie has good sceneries of China and India and the fight scenes are choreographed well. I'm glad Jackie added some humor to some of his fight scenes. that's his trademark. that's what make audiences enjoy his movies. There were also some serious fighting scenes with the Qing soldiers.... where he killed numerous enemies resulting in a pile of dead bodies and in the end Jackie gets beheaded. so there's a good mix for everyone who complains.
akane21, don't be another one of those cheapass asians. go buy a DVD like i did and support movies like this.

well, firstly, it's a Jackie Chan movie, so take it for what it's worth. i grew up watching him, so what can i say, i'm a fan and i'm not going to hate on him.
that being said, i didn't think this was one of his better movies:
i think it did have a few nice scenes, like when he stuck a spear through a guy's shoulder and he grabbed it out of the guy's body from the other side of the guy's body, and also, you have to admit, the "flying decapitated head cam" was pretty damn cool.
it seemed like he was going for a movie with a cross-cultural appeal, using a Korean actress to play a Korean character, and filming in India, casting Indian actors and actresses. as usual, he knows how to go for the commercial appeal. but i felt the movie's cross-cultural effort was only as shallow as that of a commercial one.
the ending i thought was just kind of stupid. i never liked how movies that didn't start out as sci-fi or fantasy suddenly turns into a sci-fi or fantasy movie in the middle or the end. and i especially dislike mixing the wuxia and sci-fi genres together.

This sudden switch in genres is something of a genre itself in Hong Kong movies, and is rarely done anywhere else (dumb genre parody movies like Hot Shots aside).
Look at films like Don't Look Back Or You'll Be Sorry: the first half was a terrific comedy, Dayo Wong at his best as a husband caught in a struggle of wills with his mother-in-law (Deannie Yip). When the film suddenly switches into a HK version of Poltergeist, it loses it. Real shame.

Akane21, you should dump your boyfriend because he's a cheapass asian.
You need to judge this movie based on the storyline and the quality. I'd rate it up there. It's a mix of Hero and Couching Tiger in a modern day setting. ...and it's not some hollywood crap where Jackie has to act like a clown. and hey, if old-ass Sean Connery can be in a romance movie with Catherine Zeta-Jones, why not Jackie Chan?
do you know where he got the movie? in chinatown, where every movie that comes out is taped on vhs and rented out so as to make more money. so take it up with them. and if you knew my bf, you'd know he's the biggest spender there is. he only rented it because he thought it would be cool. apparently it wasn't. and one more thing: i don't like jackie chan. oh the horror!! smoke THAT.

Overall, I wasn't impressed with it. It didn't thrill me like New Police Story did. New Police Story was far superior to The Myth in every way shape and form.
I was not impressed with the CGI. A note should be made to the CGI animators and director - You use CGI to make the unbelievable, believable....not ridiculous. When a sword goes into a body, or even a solid shield , it doesn't move around as if the body or shield is make of water.
There are other CGI gaffs in this movie, that made it look like live action animation rather than an action/fantasy.
Confusion ran rampant with me during the movie. I couldn't figure out what was going on half the time. They skipped too many times between modern and ancient times for my liking. Just when I thought I had something figured out, they would skip back and I'd be lost again.
The good points --
The choreography in the movie was enjoyable. At times it was even great.
The last scene of the final battle was excellent. It even had me let out a little "Whoa!" to an empty room.
Overall I'd have to give this movie a 4.5/10.

You must be one of those kids who have short attention deficit problems... and can only watch action movies. This movie was easy to follow. It's an action adventure with romance. I had to read subtitles and i still had no problems following the story. Moving from ancient to modern was the unique quality of this movie. Half of the movie has that "Hero/HiddenDragonCouchingTiger" feel to it... and the other half has the modern/reality feel to it. Which should appeal to international audiences as well.
I agree that the CGI could have been better, as with nearly all other movies. This movie is already the highest budget Hong Kong movie ever at $160 million. The locations for the scenes are just extraordinary. from the Terra Cottas, to the ancient temples of India, to the Great Wall of China.
The cast of the movie is also unique. There is actors/actresses from China, Hong Kong, Korea, India. There is a global feel to it. which is what the world in coming to - globalization. It's the only movie that can appeal to the whole world.
I say this was the best movie of 2005. even if you include all the hollywood movies of 2005. (boring remakes). New Police Story was a good movie also, but i can bet that The Myth will gross more money $$$ than any other hong kong movie.

Contrary to the American view, "globalisation" means more than putting a bunch of people of different races together under the framework of a single culture (whether that single culture be American, Chinese or whatever). You actually have to produce a story that appeals to people of different cultures, a task at which Myth failes.
I watched it when it came out in HK --- I thought it was alright, but my Indian classmate had other opinions ...
Jacky Chan's movies suck in general. The only movie of his that I like
is City Hunter.

Hey, if it's in ANY way better than "Twins Effect II," you got your money's worth WAY more than I did!

^ the twins effect 2? there was a part 2????

Gawd, I wish I had seen the first one before buying the second...I didn't really know who the "Twins" were before all that and then during watching it I finally realized WHY that crap was made...and I paid $8 thinking it was gonna be something...and since I paid for it, I forced myself to finish watching it...
And yes, Jackie Chan is in it, in an extremely brief and thankless role, even though he has prominent billing on the cover...ended up giving it away to a Salvation Army depot...never, ever impulse buy shit again!

Drunken Master 2 was basically the pinnacle of Jackie Chan's career, with everything before that to be generally of great quality. Everything after that just sucked major ass when he became all clownish and dorky. Most people judging Jackie Chan films only know of his more recent titles (which still stretch back around a decade), and are deprived because they don't know much better his much older older projects were.

i think it was produced by Jackie Chan's production company, JC Group (or something like that). by the way, Jackie's son was one of the main characters in Twins Effect 2.
if you understand the popularity of Twins, you'd understand why crap like Twins Effect 1 and 2 were made.

Hey! You're not supposed to be judging them by their appearance! Gil (or was it Charlotte) went on TV crying about how people were talking about the size of their thighs. So you know what that means ... they want to be judged by their talents instead. (insert evil laugh here).
by the way, Jackie's son was one of the main characters in Twins Effect 2.
yup, gotta love nepotism ... what a fuckin stinker ...

So I just watched it this morning, about 12 hours ago.
Given that my comprehension of Mandarin is almost non-existent and my Cantonese usually requires me to practice my phrasing slightly aloud to make sure I have the tones for what I'm trying to say correct, the parts I did get was not bad.
Taking into account that this is a Jackie Chan flick (and yeah, I'm a fan, I like his sort of clowning, and not the sort with makeup and balloons), I watched it more for the physical aspects than the story.
I think the story had potential, but for the time frame, it didn't come to fruitition. If there were further development in the plotline, I think it would have made a good book.
Some of the scenery (female and mother nature) was beautiful.
The character development, like most Jackie Chan flicks, left me wanting more, but then again I didn't go into it expecting an Oscar awarding performance.
I think the comparisons to Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon are a bit exagerated. In terms of storyline, character growth, plot development, scenery and setting, costumes, and overall content and presentation, The Myth doesn't even come close to movies like Hero or Crouching TIger, Hidden Dragon.
I did appreciate the fact that the story/plot followed a lot of general Asian storylines (Beauty Meets a Sad Fate, Scholar Falls In Love with Beauty, Brothers Divided by Money/Beauty, etc).
Other than the fact that I got a version without subtitles, thus leaving me guessing what was REALLY being said, though I got the gist of things, I'd say the film was doing what it set out to do, it entertained me.
I'd rate this a 5.5 - 6 out of 10.
Now on to my other 3 film reviews. LOL -cries-

I don't care for him too much either. Sure, we watch his movies but only for mindless entertainment. Ignore the comment about your bf.
