Because of the Anti-Defamation League's vast experience in dealing with issues of prejudice and bigotry, the League has collaborated with the Committee of 100, an organization of prominent Chinese Americans, to study American attitudes toward Chinese Americans and Asian Americans.
The study, conducted by Yankelovich Partners in collaboration with The Marttila Communications Group, shows similarities with studies ADL has conducted on American prejudice toward Jews:
ADL's 1998 poll on anti-Semitism found that 31 percent said Jews were more loyal to Israel than America. This poll found that 32 percent believe that Chinese Americans are more loyal to China than America.
On "control" and "power," in the 1998 poll, 16 percent of those surveyed said that Jews have too much control of Wall Street, while in this new survey, 34 percent said Chinese Americans have too much control of high technology.
With Chinese Americans, in this survey, a potentially volatile mix of racial prejudice and political prejudice was found.
"The results of this first comprehensive survey of American attitudes toward Asian Americans are disturbing," said Abraham H. Foxman, ADL National Director. "It tells us that prejudice continues to be a part of the American landscape. At the same time, it provides us with a benchmark from which we can proceed."
Several findings of the poll were particularly disturbing:
34 percent said that they would not want a Chinese American as president of the U.S. This was a special point of concern for ADL, which has not seen any similar finding in its surveys on attitudes toward Jews or Blacks.
ADL believes that Chinese Americans face a combination of lingering racial prejudice stemming from 19th Century anti-Chinese immigration laws together with significant political negativity, the combination of which depicts Chinese-Americans as "outsiders."
