View Full Version : Drug culture in Asia
kimpossible led me to a question I have for the Board...
How is the drug culture in Asia, different than in the States?
A Beijing girl I know (back in China now) wouldn't accept a drink, even if I bought her one! But she wanted to get some magic mushrooms, as she called them.
What is used in Asian countries, and how does it differ from what is available/popular in the States?

I heard weed is very potent in Hangzhou. I know someone who use to be a nurse that worked with anti-drug inspectors.
They have 5 levels of drugs. Level 1 and 2 is proably drugs kids play around with, up to level 5 which can kill a person.
Because penalties for abusing drugs are high, most of the drugs floating around urban areas are low quality. According to my friend that is. I don't use drugs.

in HK, drugs are more frowned upon by mainstream society than they are in the US, including even weed. and the public seems to be less educated about what the different kinds of drugs can do to you. they just know that drugs screws with your mind. but as with most societies, you can still find users and dealers.
I believe shrooms were legal in Japan (or at least non-criminalized) up until the World Cup was played there a few years back. They sold them out in the open on the street.
I can see how someone might turn down alcohol but might partake in more illicit fare. It all depends on what makes the individual feel good.

and don't take the turning down alcohol by one girl to be representative of all beijing girls. there's plenty of bars in beijing and there's plenty of girls to fill them.

In recent years, there has been a lot of ecstasy running around the club scene in China. I can only imagine what sort of fake crap gets pawned off as genuine ecstasy. I can only fear what that shit is cut with, whether real or fake.
Oh, and hash is easy to score out there.

Also, according to my conversations with law enforcement officials, soft drugs and other party drugs are huge since the 1980s in Hong Kong, and pot is also a fast growing controlled substance. Youth in Hong Kong are also known to use over the counter drugs such as cough syrups, and other prescription drugs.
There are reports of cocaine busts in Hong Kong. However, it is unknown how widespread is cocaine use in Hong Kong.
In addition, Shenzhen has become a major production and distribution center of ecstasy according to law enforcement officials that I spoke with.
Before the 1980s, however, drug use was pretty much limited to hard drugs, in particular heroin. Opium use was rare.
Soft drugs, and other forms of amphetamines can be imagined as consumer goods of illicit nature. As the economy grows and increase of consumption of legitimate consumer goods, we can also expect an increase of drug use...

I hear in Korea and Japan, drug laws are crazy strict. A friend of mine says that in Korea, kids are taught to think any kind of drug is bad, like there's no in-between. It's a pretty black and white view of recreational drug use, it seems.

In Bangkok I know lots of people who smoke the weed but it's done very hush hush. There are "club" drugs around here like X and meth but you're looking at spending serious time in the Bangkok Hilton if you get nailed. Even then it's available if you really want to find it. I'd say in Thailand it's generally frowned upon by non westernized asians. Unfortunately, alcoholism is rising in this country because rampant binge drinking isn't thought of as an excess but normal "sanuk" during parties.

Yeah, this mentality really pisses me off in Asia. Especially China. All these old businessmen and government officials screaming "Drugs are evil and immoral! Drugs are a scheme foisted on us by evil Westerners! Now let's go to a hostess bar to get puke-drunk on Remy Martin and go sleep with some hookers!"
