i moved this over from a different forum cuz i didn't see this one at the time
i got interested in liquid and popping a couple years ago when i really started going to clubs. it just got into my blood for awhile and i'd practiced for maybe 2 hrs a day for about 6 months when i was really into it. i still practice, but now its used more as a stress reliever than a hobby. just wondering if anybody here has a passion for it and how long u've been at it.
my style is more liquid than pop (tuts and boxes thrown in to keep it interesting) and i dance mostly to breaks and trance. but i'm starting to pick up hip-hoppish moves like c-walking and house-stepping. i never felt very comfortable with glosticks and photons because i liked to keep my fingers free, but i'll use them when i just don't give a sh!t.
for those of you that don't have a good idea of what liquid and popping is and are interested, here are a couple links style2ouf (http://www.style2ouf.com/) u'll wanna visit the french site and check the vids there. wiggles has links to a bunch of other sites. mrwiggleshiphop (http://www.mrwiggleshiphop.net/dance_clips83.htm)

i'm all about glowsticking... :D
as you can see by my avatar.
i also do VERY little liquid, but i like tutting a lot. it doesn't look very clean or anything, but it's just fun to do. my friend mike can house step and pop like crazy.
most of the time, when i try to dance, i just end up looking like this ---->
oh, and if you wanna see some good glowsticking, go to Glowsticking.com (http://www.glowsticking.com)

i saw that website a while back. the guys glowsticking on there must be out of their minds. i haven't seen anyone even come close to them where i've been. unfortunately, i don't get to see good dancers much anymore cuz i don't live close to atl anymore.

where do you live now? gsc's members are mostly concentrated in norcal/socal and i guess hawaii, but there're members scattered all over the place.
oh, and shaddupanddance.com is also a good resource if you're interested in popping, liquid, etc... but i think the site's down though.
how old are you? and if you have any vids of your tutting or popping i'd love to see them...

i only know how to ballroom, and even then, i'm not the sharpest. i'm considering taking classes again at a community college during the upcoming spring semester, though. only thing is, i'm kinda scared of signing up without a partner.

:D i'm taking ballroom dance next quarter... there'll be ballroom + some latin dance styles. i can't wait... (the fact that the class ratio is 1 guy to 2 girls has nothing to do with it! ... really! ;))
im trying to get one of my female friends to take the class w/ me, but if statistics work in my favor, i'll have them fighting over.. me.. ha... ha...

that guy sorta reminds me of the dancer elsewhere. but whoever he was, he was off the hook :) .
yeah, shaddupanddance was actually the site that really helped me get better. we lost a great resource when that site shut down. i still have a lot of the good vids from acidfiend's ftp. but haven't found many good ones since.
unfortunately i don't live anywhere near cali. i moved to mobile for my job. its just far enough from atl that its a pain to drive over but its still in alabama. goddamn...
i'm 24 now. old geezer type... what about you?
my aol screenname is wubbo22 if u wanna trade some files sometime. although there prolly won't be much to trade if u were a shaddupanddance regular or acidfiend leech.

i'm 18. wasn't a regular on shaddupanddance, and never could find out the ip to acidfiend's ftp... did you use to post on iloveraving.com?
my sn is bigwong235. i'm normally on a lot, but i'm busy (not) studying for a midterm right now, but i'm usually on all the time.

i think i registered, but i didn't post much. i didn't learn as much from that site as shaddupanddance. and ya, acid's ftp site was hidden deep in the forums b/c he specifically wanted only very committed ppl to have access to the site.
i'm not on aim much at all typically, but just post a note here or to me personally when u're finished studying.

I know a little popping. But I do everything from hip hop to salsa to ballroom to east coast swing. :) Even dance dance revolution. LOL

hmmm.. breaking and popping when i was a kid, but since i moved to sf 5 years ago, i mainly dance to drum and bass (2-4 hours of a mixture of liquid, leg-spinning, and foot-gliding) and hip-hop... i went swing dancing recently with gf and it was pretty fun. :)
though i'm an old club-head from nyc, i think the "rave scene" now is too oriented towards little kids adorned with neon getting f*cked up versus a good time dancing to great music.

liquid is friggin' awesome, i'd love to get good at it. i dance like i rhyme, freestyle, making up moves as i go. i like to name them, and share them with girls, uh.
'alright, c'mon baby, we 'bout 2 do tha Car-Crash, remember dat 1..... uh,uh-huh, that's it! u got it, love'
i incorporate a lil popping and breaking and all that. i want to learn glowsticky stuff, too cos i've seen some ppl that are look real cool when they get tricky. let me see, freakin', i'm a fan.
i do this dance (aka stance/ pose) called the Superman where i stand there, legs shoulder-width apart, hands on my hips, and watch as the lady twerks. ooh-wee! that's what i'm talkin' 'bout.
really though, i'd love to learn more formal dances like the tango and cha-cha.
ooh-ooh, salsa! latin dancing is so much fun.

I can do the moonwalk hehe

interesting. never seen a battle like that. most of the battles i've seen (that aren't just straight dancing) involves pretending to whip out one's dick and pee, dickslap, or jizz over the opponent.

the group i used to go clubbing w/ (and practiced w/) is all scattered now so even when i go clubbing i don't really bust out b/c i don't feel that comfortable. my boxing has progressed a bit but everything else has gotten kinda rusty.

why moved? dancing is not considered an art? but just a party?
anyway, im in a crew and we 3 times practice every week. so far only been to the 4 competitions, the highest place won was 2nd, are repa is basically includes b-boy, boog, pop, hip hop and a little lock. i do pop and hip hop. my speciality is tutting and freestyle too. my firiend is in another crew who do hip hop and pop and they won 400000 cash prize of 1st place! so we were happy for their success, but just a little bit jealous

"tutting" is a part of popping. "hitting" is also part of popping, like when you "hit" your muscles in the dance. btw "hit" in this way is not the "violent punch" meaning, but the "flex muscles qucikly" meaning when dancing.
but boxing is like the sport in Olympics. you can hit in boxing, thats meaning is "violent punch" in this case
so i dont want to hurt my face because its we have to look good when we dancing  i like dancing for geting dance skill, getting money, and gettin girls.
VV o n g B a
09-21-2005, 12:27 PM
we're talking about two different things then. the boxing i'm talking about is really an offshoot of tutting. u can't box w/o tutting really. its where u create a box out of ur arms and/or hands that are at 90 deg angles. the box walls can grow, shrink, twist, break, collide, and move thru each other.
the idea is similar to liquid in that u have to think of ways to keep ur hands in certain positions relative to each other.
yuuteya
09-21-2005, 06:05 PM
Actually we are talking about the same thing all along, but with all these English synonyms "hitting" and "boxing" I got confused . English is difficult
ok to clarify, tutting cames from an old style called "king tut", its pretty much the same but just the name was changed, so king tut, which was based on copying the shape of egiptian pyramid paintings, so the armes and legs are put like squares or sharp angles 90 degrees. yes your right about the tutting-box connection, thought ive always just seen it as a variation within tutting in general. the basics are connected.
but i cant say its connected to liquid, thats a very different style. no geneological connection to tutting style with its hip hop and funk connections. that liquid dance is from the 90s euro trance stuff. quite different thing altogher.

well actually for me i cant really comment about liquid since i never got so involved in it. it never appealling to me, just never was interested in the 90s european trance euro dance scene, i cant really groove with euro music, its too lack of funkyness and groove bass, more kind of lame synth music imo. to me mostly groove to urban american underground sounds, by djs and artist from nyc garage, chicago, detroit's techno, miami, los. those sounds from london, belgium, ibiza, italo, german, not as good as american imo. but i guess it depends on the personal taste.
VV o n g B a
09-22-2005, 08:46 AM
i actually didn't dance much to eurotrance except at home. the clubs that i went to had asian dj's that spun mostly remixed vocal breaks. as long as it was electronica i felt pretty comfortable. in fact, i actually liked how the irregular beats allowed me to break up the smooth motions of liquid. straight beats like hard house bored me.
but since my friends mostly dance to hiphop now i don't liquid at all. i throw a few popping moves in here and there but mostly its just grinding (which has both positives and negatives). it's been years since i've "been in the zone" where i could just dance and be on a self induced high.

as long as it was electronica i felt pretty comfortable. in fact, i actually liked how the irregular beats allowed me to break up the smooth motions of liquid. straight beats like hard house bored me."electronica" is a general term, what particular genre are you talking about btw? presonally detroit is one of greatest for me i think, though overlooked by most people. hard house is good, but i like the david morales, maw kind of stuff alot, especially the latin groove hypno style of house most. 1st generation house is unbeatable, even you got the digital technology now but the old school was dope!

"electronica" is a general term, what particular genre are you talking about btw?i meant electronic music in general actually as i like most of it. well, excepting hard house and that million bpm jungle/dnb stuff. the type i like most is breaks. chemical/acid/electro (chemical bros, crystal method) and florida breaks (baby anne).
btw, when i say hiphop i mean straight rap or rnb. i know breaks came from hiphop but it doesn't associate in dance for me for whatever reason.

yah i agree, electro/abstract/breakbeats is way better to me too. its my oxygen. the slower dramnbass is great too.
btw, when i say hiphop i mean straight rap or rnb. i know breaks came from hiphop but it doesn't associate in dance for me for whatever reason.which rap you like? west, south, or east? i like all sides, esp the breakbeats heavy stuff. actually i like electronic music too, everything from the 70s pioneers to now, analog and digital, bit prefer analog more. especially the tracks with groove and bass. you like miami florida sound too? cool i like dj sandy.

I like to dance hip hop, that's probably why I'm in Barkada Modern (www.barkadamodern.com). I want to get into breaking and build some strength. My little brother is really into breaking and has been for quite some time now. He grew stronger than ever, and I can't even beat him in arm wrestling no more. But yeah, I just love to dance, if anyone is down here in So Cal drop by Cal Poly Pomona to watch some of our performances! We plan to go into competitions with some of the teams down here i.e. Kaba Modern, Sick Step, Pac Modern, 220, and so on...

Barkada Modern? Nice.
All the flip dance crews i've seen from california are pretty insane.
I think UH Filipino Student Association has jocked some of your routines for one of the past modern dance competitions in our Goodphil Games. (Inter-FSA Athletic/Dance Competition)

Definitely not the best, but I thought I could impress.
It's great to read the posts in this threads from 2002 when raves were still a big thing. It was madness for about 2 years here and then... nothing.
