Dyeing Our Hair Blond = Dying To Be White?

so some argue that when asian chicks dye their hair, they're actually engaging in self-hatred and trying really hard to conform to the white standard of beauty.

what do you think?

i personally think that highlighted hair (on asians) can be very pretty. and white girls, b/c of their natural hair color and texture, won't even be able make their hair look like that.

i'm not making sense. what do you think?

i don't think it's that we're trying to be white. quite the contrary. i think dyed hair can be really really sexy. well, some that is. sometimes it's just very untastefully done. if asian women were really trying to look white, it takes a bit more than dyed hair to do the trick. i've had my hair hi-lighted blonde, brown, orange, red. u name it. i've also had colored contacts in the past before too. the odd thing is that now that i'm older, i kinda like natural best of all. some brown natural-ish highlights are my preference. but i don't think it was ever about looking white.

i don't think that the theory is that people are consciously choosing to be white but rather that it somehow has infected their standard of what is beautiful (without them actually knowing it.)

I certainly think it's worth questioning if looking more Western affects society's view of what beauty "ought" to be. I think my attitudes have changed when I was in junior high school as opposed to now. When I was younger, I used to think that people who highlighted or streaked their hair were categorized as the rebellious types with no future. Then again, I wasn't very exposed to the world that much either back then. Now the "corrupted" person that I am, I really don't give it much thought. I started highlighting my hair my first year of college, but I've never dyed or highlighted it blonde. I've always had bronze-ish highlights. Now, I just have this mohagany thing going... that is after a year of my natural black hair. I could care less if my hair's dyed or if it's natural. To me, it's what lies within DUUUUDES and DuuuuuuDETTES and what your intentions are. :D

I'd highlighted blonde hair for 2 years and many people said it made me look far more sexy and beautiful than with my natural color. I also went platinum blonde once, and it was too much for me. So, I always wondered about those Asian models who dyed their hair blonde (Tila Nyugen, Dana Sang, Tyra Leang, Jasmine Fox Li, to name a few) they were trying to be something they're not? Or is it simply just a sexy look opposed to full head dyed blonde. I think natural dark hair is beautiful, no kidding, but for strange reason, I look better with highlights 'cause it soften up my face and make my skin look illuminated. People kept saying I looked beautiful, including strangers. With my natural dark hair, not one peep on my appearance, only on my hair which they've said very silky and shiny. That's it. Is that strange or what? :unsure:

but we're not saying that those who are dyeing their hair blond may be striving to be "blond"...we're saying that there's a possibility that they subconsciously want to conform with the Caucasian standard of beauty - which may entail having blond hair.

but nobody, aside from pipsy, has really stated their preference yet. would it be black or blond?

Dying ones hair doesn't define their race. I see white people dying their hair black and I don't hear anyone complaining that they're Asian wannabes. It's a matter of preference.

Yeah, I had that blond hair stage last year. I only bleached it because I wanted to dye it purple. Then I decided blond bangs on the sides of my face would look nice, and I did it. Until now, I still have that pic stuck in my college student ID.

These days, I'm happy being a subtle readhead.

I like both colors. At the moment, I prefer blonde. I've dyed my hair blonde and has been one for more than 2 years now. I'm not trying to be white, in spite what people think, but I find it fun thing to do. I will have black hair for the rest of my life, so while I am young, I'd run loose and dye my hair in different colors. Then when I'm older and more settled down, I'd revert to my natural roots and stay that way till I die. The point here is that it has nothing to do being trying to be white or being disloyal to my azn roots, but a matter of personal freedom to express myself. Hair is one of the first things people notice. I'm not doing it to attract men (which I have enough of that) or make other women jealous.
