Iraq War Veteran Launches Bid for House

Sun Dec 18, 7:01 PM ET

LOMBARD, Ill. -
Iraq war veteran L. Tammy Duckworth, a helicopter pilot who lost her legs to a rocket-propelled grenade attack, formally announced her candidacy Sunday for the congressional seat of retiring Republican Rep. Henry Hyde (news, bio, voting record).

The Army major is one of about a half dozen Iraq war veterans running for office as Democrats, lending their military backgrounds to the party's argument that it can be strong on defense and national security, even as its leaders criticize
President Bush's handling of the war.

Duckworth says she wants to focus on health care, education and the economy in her campaign, though she knows the war will be a big issue.

She privately disagreed with Bush's decision to invade Iraq, but still volunteered to serve.

"We should have been fighting the enemies that attacked us at home on 9/11," Duckworth told ABC's "This Week" on Sunday. "We should have been out there trying to catch
Osama bin Laden."

Duckworth and her Democratic opponents in the March primary face an uphill battle in the 6th District, in Chicago's western suburbs. The conservative Hyde represented the area for 32 years.

Her Democratic opponents — businesswoman Christine Cegelis and Wheaton College professor Lindy Scott — have had a head start on fundraising, because Duckworth had to delay her candidacy until her release from active duty, granted Wednesday. State Sen. Peter Roskam is the only Republican candidate for Hyde's seat.

Duckworth, who has degrees in political science and international affairs, says she decided to run after attending the State of the Union address as a guest of Sen. Richard Durbin (news, bio, voting record), D-Ill., and testifying before veteran affairs committees on Capitol Hill.

I believe this is a pic of Ms. Duckworth.

Now.

In a recent debate, her republican opponent accused of wanting to "cut and run" from Iraq. The question is -- was that sort of comment in poor taste, considering Ms. Duckworth's physical condition?

Democrat brings Iraq experience to poll (http://msnbc.msn.com/id/14988252/)

During an election debate at the weekend in the outskirts of Chicago, Peter Roskam, the Republican candidate for Illinois's sixth district, trotted out the familiar line that his Democratic opponent wanted America to "cut and run" from Iraq.

His opponent, Tammy Duckworth, a former National Guard pilot who lost both her legs in Iraq last year when her helicopter was shot down by a rocket-propelled grenade, was visibly angry at the exchange. "I just could not believe he would say that to me," said Ms Duckworth, who now walks on artificial legs with the help of a cane. "I have risked my life to serve my country and you cannot question my patriotism."

She's an incredible woman. I hope she wins. Her opponent deserves to lose just for being a punk. The boy is a typical phony patriot/tough guy.

Another sissy who wants to be brave with OTHER people's lives and limbs.

I bet she would whoop the shit out of Roskam. And she should. If I still resided in Chi town, she'd get my vote.

She lost 51 percent to 49 percent behind Roskam.

Amazing. She managed to raise $3M+ for her campaign. 80% of the money from individuals, supposedly.

Roskam on the other hand raised a smaller amount, but PAC's consisted of %33 of his funding.

Hopefully she will rise again in some other sector or political form!
She had even made the headlines briefly in the UK. That is pretty good going, they called her the Republican's worse nightmare....

At the moment the UK media is dominated by the suspicious death of a former Russian Spy. But I still hold a flame for this lady. One for the future I think....There is no doubt she is proper BRAVE!

Here is her site!

Will GWB appoint Tammy to a commission looking into allegations of piss-poor support of Walter Reed?

Duckworth was a congressional candidate last year and now is the director of the Illinois Department of Veterans Affairs (http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/local/west/chi-0703120189mar12,1,4332150.story?coll=chi-newslocalwest-hed). U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) has asked President Bush to appoint her to a commission that will look into allegations of poor care and dilapidated conditions at Walter Reed.

...

Duckworth said she noticed some signs of maintenance problems at Walter Reed.

There was a cockroach in her hospital room once, and she saw mice at Mologne House, another building where outpatients and their relatives live. Some of Duckworth's family stayed at Mologne House during her rehabilitation.
